Early Site History:
In the late 19th century, the site was home to Tan Kim Cheng,
the eldest son of philanthropist Tan Tock Seng. Known as Siam House, it served as the residence of Tan Kim Cheng until his death in 1892. The adjacent street, now Coleman Street, was referred to in Hokkien and Cantonese as 'beside Chin Seng’s house,' with 'Chin Seng' being the name on Tan Kim Cheng's seal. Later, the site housed Meyer Mansions, considered Singapore's first 'flatted residence,' before its demolition in 1970 to make way for Peninsula Plaza.

Cultural Significance:
Little Myanmar: Over the years, Peninsula Plaza has evolved into a cultural hub for Singapore's Burmese community, earning the nickname 'Little Myanmar.' The mall hosts numerous Burmese-owned businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, and travel agencies, providing a sense of home for the Burmese diaspora. It also serves as a gathering place, especially on weekends, and has been a center for community activities, such as organizing relief operations following Myanmar's Cyclone Nargis in 2008.
