Velkomin til Dimmuborgir. Dimmuborgir translates to "Dark Castles" or "Dark Cities" in Icelandic. It is a massive, otherworldly area of unusually shaped lava fields, volcanic caves, and rock formations located east of Lake Mývatn in North Iceland. Formed about 2,300 years ago during a major volcanic eruption, molten lava covered a wet, marshy lakebed. Trapped water boiled violently, blasting steam through the cooling crust. As the lava drained, it left towering hollow columns, arches, and citadel-like rock formations. www.karendolanart.com

A colourful wall of a magma chamber deep inside the Thríhnúkagígur Volcano in Iceland. Vibrant shades of yellow, red, purple and green are formed when different chemical substances and metal ores react with high heat and magma. Thríhnúkagígur last erupted 4,500 years ago and is the only place in the world where you can go inside a volcano. The chamber sits about 200 meters (650 feet) underground and is large enough to fit a Statue of Liberty inside. www.karendolanart.com
