Axolot | Cave Diving | Underwater

My good friend JC Erba is a brilliant instructor, who pays a lot of attention to detail and offers courses which will definitely make you a better diver. It’s not only that he has a lot of experience, but in his mind it’s clear that you always can get better. He doesn’t say or want that only for others, he gives himself the same treatment and never stops evolving. I think this picture shows that perfectly!

Monochromatic | Cave Diving | Underwater

The first photographs ever taken were monochromatic. This was simply because the photographic processes of the time could record variations in light and dark, but not color. Much later, color photography was invented, but that didn't mark the end of monochromatic photography. Not at all.

Nowadays, black and white is often used to make photographs look more artistic. Personally, I think color is very important, and most of my pictures show it in all its glory. However, removing color from certain images can make the photograph more interesting.

When the balance of light and shadow is just right and the contrast is strong enough, color suddenly becomes unimportant. This is perhaps especially true underwater, where light itself becomes an important part of the image.

Mesmerizing Tunnels | Cave Diving | Underwater

We all love cave formations, but tunnels with fewer stalactites and stalagmites can be just as impressive. As you move through the cave, the walls constantly reshape your perspective, while every movement of a dive light creates new shadows and reflections.

No two moments ever look exactly the same.

Liquid Mirror | Cave Diving | Underwater

Some caves have trapped air collecting along the ceiling, creating fascinating reflections that make the cave even more magical. The air can look like quicksilver or a liquid mirror flowing overhead.

Confusing the Algorithm | Dama de la Noche | Nature

Most of my posts are about cave diving photography. Whenever I post something different, I reach far fewer people and receive fewer interactions. It probably isn't what the algorithm expects from my account.

So why do I do it?

Because I don't want to show only underwater caves. I want to share the way I see the world through photography.

Technology has changed photography tremendously. Phones have become incredible tools. They not only take pictures, but also process them. And now AI is becoming an even bigger part of the creative process. I don't necessarily see that as a bad thing. But no matter how advanced our tools become, they still can't replace curiosity, patience, or the ability to recognize a moment worth capturing.

That's what keeps inspiring me, whether it's a cave, a flower, or a city street.

Pop of Color | Cave Diving | Underwater

Although dive gear is becoming more colourful, most of it is still black. This can make the diver in a picture "disappear", particularly in caves.

However, as soon as you add a splash of colour, such as this yellow helmet, the subject jumps right out at you. Your eye is instantly drawn to it, anchoring your view and giving the picture a completely different feel.

Halocline | Cave Diving | Underwater

Cenote Cristal's southwestern Sac Be passage is a unique cave diving experience. The upper half is dark and moody and filled with fresh water, while the lower half opens into bright saltwater tunnels.

The transition between the two is known as a halocline. Here, the two bodies of water meet but don't immediately mix, creating one of the most fascinating visual effects in cave diving.

Nothing in this image is actually out of focus. The blurry appearance in the upper half is caused by the halocline itself, which distorts the light as it passes through the layers of water.

Cave Curtains | Cenote Cristal | Underwater

If you simplify it, there are three major cave formations: stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Of course, cave systems offer far more variety than that.

The formations illuminated by the diver are known as “cave curtains.” They get their name from their shape, resembling folded or open curtains hanging from the ceiling.

Trapped Air | Cave Diving | Underwater

Trapped air bubbles are a common sight in underwater caves. Some have been there since the cave flooded, while others are left behind by divers.

With every breath, or through the use of a dry suit, small amounts of air collect along the ceiling. In some places, the bubbles escape through cracks in the rock. In others, they remain trapped and gather into large pockets that appear almost like quicksilver.

Depending on the angle, these pockets can even turn into perfect mirrors.
