Cave Curtains | Cenote Cristal | Underwater

If you simplify it, there are three major cave formations: stalactites, stalagmites, and columns. Of course, cave systems offer far more variety than that.

The formations illuminated by the diver are known as “cave curtains.” They get their name from their shape, resembling folded or open curtains hanging from the ceiling.

Trapped Air | Cave Diving | Underwater

Trapped air bubbles are a common sight in underwater caves. Some have been there since the cave flooded, while others are left behind by divers.

With every breath, or through the use of a dry suit, small amounts of air collect along the ceiling. In some places, the bubbles escape through cracks in the rock. In others, they remain trapped and gather into large pockets that appear almost like quicksilver.

Depending on the angle, these pockets can even turn into perfect mirrors.

Cenote Xulo | Cave Diving | Underwater

What makes Cenote Xulo stand out is the way it transitions from large chambers to tight passages in a matter of minutes.

The cave's scale constantly shifts, yet it remains richly decorated throughout. Wide spaces open up and quickly narrow again, creating a varied dive from start to finish.

It's also a photographers dream as it offers new compositions around every corner.

Framing in Cave Diving | Cenote Chan Hol | Underwater

In cave photography, composition often comes down to positioning.

Small adjustments by the diver, light assistant, or myself can completely change the final image. The difference is in the details.

This passage naturally frames Patricio Nahuel , drawing the focus straight to the center. Backlighting by Alessandro Totola adds depth, shaping the scene with light and shadow.

Fresh vs Salt | Cenote Cristal | Underwater

This two clips are taking in the same dive.

The shallower part is filled with fresh water and the cave is very dark. After 20 minutes you will reach the deeper saltwater tunnels and the cave turns white.

In this particular tunnel you even have the upper part black and the lower part white as the halocline lies in the middle.

Have you ever wondered what it would have felt like to come across Maya pyramids hidden in the jungle?

At Uxmal, you can still experience that feeling. Once you pass the main pyramid, you will see areas where structures are partially overgrown, offering a glimpse of what these sites looked like before they were cleared.

Not everything has been excavated. Archaeologists intentionally leave sections untouched, partly to preserve them and partly because future technologies may reveal more than is possible today.

Not Our Environment | Cave Diving | Underwater

As divers, we rely on equipment to stay where we don’t belong.

In the beginning, every piece of gear feels new and unfamiliar. But over time, it becomes routine and is almost invisible.

Until something is missing.

No mask means no vision.
No fins means no movement.
No wing means no buoyancy control.
No air… no time.

It’s easy to forget how dependent we are, especially on simple or familiar dives. But the reality doesn’t change: This is not our natural environment and dive accordingly.
