Recently I haven’t been inspired to create, nothing has caught my eye in a way that made me want to capture it just so. But during a school project looking at the socio-environmental impact of human behaviour we stumbled across lost history and the power nature has to take over.
This is the Vancouver island power co. Watershed located in Jordan river, BC. Although this land once belonged to First Nations it was taken over by white colonizers, industrialized and then discarded when it had been polluted and there was no more money to be made. Today even BC hydro continues to prioritize pocket margins over environmental degradation. Thus rather then fix their ageing dam they have, know, no use for, they would rather see an entire town flood. Rather then fixing it they purchased all the land and destroyed the remaining homes, and once they were done “cleaning up” they sold it back to the First Nations.
Here are a few before and afters of the only structure really left on the sooke side of Jordan river. It’s incredible what nature can do in 49 years
