n Australia, moulded in England and raised in South Africa you could say I’m a bit of an international enigma. Although, in all honesty I’m a South African with and English accent and Australian passport. Until then, laugh at the confusion, live for the moments and know everything happens for a reason. Let’s chat.

There are a number of encounters I’d like to experience before leaving earth and this was one of them… finally!!

You have it all planned out in your head, it’s perfect! You’ll get a really close pass, maybe even a pause and some interaction. Camera primed, all is in focus. You resurface and bam, dream come true.

Yeah my first orca experience didn’t go like that.

We got perfectly lined up, on and pre focused. The excitement was brimming and with it was a miscalculated slip off of the boat while it was still in motion (engines off). The next diver further aft slid in a moment later landing on my fin subsequently knock it off.

I scrambled around looking for it in the cloud of bubbles. There it was about 4 meters down and sinking. I plunged, camera in tow. Grabbed it and as I rotated to return to surface I came face to face with the mocking glance of three females. I wasn’t single handedly strong enough to swing the camera around in time and reattach my fin. Alas, so it goes.

This clip was one of the following passes.

Non-stop Oceanic Manta Rays!

With a wing span close to 5 meters and blessed with the biggest brain among all fish, these gentle giants were more than happy to get close and personal.

Sometimes you couldn’t help but wonder if they wanted some scratches or simply some help with removing one or two of their free-loading remoras. That one with the remora suckling its eye couldn’t have been too comfortable.

No touchy! Just aiming the barrel of a 70mm in their approximate direction. They weren’t bothered with the light either. Curiosity and some bubble baths is what I’d leave it down to.

Filming spotted and bottlenose dolphins off Bimini sounds calm in theory.
In reality it’s absolute chaos.

They don’t cruise past nicely for the camera. They buzz you. Circle you. Appear from blind spots. Click, squeak, and rocket past your dome port so close the lens fogs from panic. Just when you think you’ve framed the shot, three more arrive from nowhere and the whole scene explodes again.

It’s challenging. It’s messy. You miss half the moments.

And it’s still one of the best experiences in the ocean.

An hour on scuba in Bimini with bottlenose dolphins that could not have cared less about us. They were busy hunting, methodically working the sand for buried fish, completely calm, completely focused. We never chased. We never needed to. They just stayed, passing by, looping back, letting us exist in their world.

Every so often one or two would break from feeding, rocket around us, squeaking like lunatics, then casually drop back down and carry on as if nothing happened.

No performance. No interaction forced. Just trust, proximity, and pure wild behavior. Easily the best dolphin encounter I have ever had.

Gaia. Four meters of calm confidence.

Gentle giant. Slow. Curious. Almost polite.

But don’t get it twisted. This is still a full blown powerhouse. I learned that the hard way when I got wedged between her and another hammer and was promptly shoveled out of the way.

Grace and force in the same body. Respect required at all times.

Hide and seek on the reef.

Tiger sharks rarely arrive with drama. They drift in quietly curious enough to look but alert enough to vanish just as fast.

You do not chase a tiger shark. You wait. If it comes back you are being allowed into the game.

Camels wander these dunes like they built them. And sure the sunset silhouette is the oldest trick in the desert but on Socotra it refuses to feel tired. The light hits the sand the camels drift through frame and suddenly the cliché becomes the point. Timeless never argues.
