I really can’t remember the last time I’ve made any type of introduction post. I’ve gotten quite a bit of new followers in the last year or so and August is my anniversary month for going full time. So here goes nothing.
Contrary to popular belief, Michael is actually my first name. Not Gabe or Gabriel. That’s my middle name. I picked this username when I was in high school and it just kind of stuck.
I grew up on the south side of San Antonio. I had lots of hobbies growing up (skateboarding, played drum set, etc.) but photography was really the only one that stuck.
I’ve never actually taken any formal/technical photography classes.
Funny enough, I went to school for digital marketing at Texas State University. My thinking was if I ended up at a marketing agency and I got to shoot for them from time to time, that would be the extent of my photo career. And then I did that exact thing. And hated it.
I had this fear in my head that being a full time photographer was an impossible goal. So I never had the courage to even attempt that. So when I graduated, I looked for work. About a year later a landed my first entry-level role at said agency.
I never stopped shooting for myself though. Around that time, I had started to put myself out there more and more. Posting slightly more consistently and shooting even when I wasn’t getting paid work.
My last year at that agency, my freelance income was getting consistently closer and closer to what my salary was. So when I got laid off post-Covid, I just never looked for another job.
That was 4 years ago this month.
In hindsight, it felt so quick and kind of organic how I got to this point. But truly it took many years, long nights, and lots of really scary moments to get to this point. But the payoff is so worth it.
I say this not to flex how awesome my life is, but to make the point that it definitely is not an impossible goal. No matter what you do, do it with passion and patience. Then it will be impossible to fail.
I truly appreciate and will always be grateful for every person I’ve met, every project I’ve worked on, and every opportunity that’s has come my way. Love you all.
