Yesterday was World Eelphant Day!!

I therefore present an African bush elephant (Loxodonta africana). Recent genetic studies have described the African elephant as two separate species, the Critically Endangered forest elephants of West Africa and the Endangered bush elephant, distributed across various countries around Africa.

Experimenting with shutter speed reveals a new side to this cormorant (Phalacrocorax carbo). You can see in this photo that cormorants have quite a short wing length to body ratio compared to other avian species. This characteristic allows for more efficient underwater movement to catch prey. However, like most adaptations, there is a trade off as their shorter wings result in one of the highest energetic flight costs of any bird.

It's Remembrance Sunday, so I thought I would share the moment when I was visited by a curious fox (Vulpes vulpes) sniffing around this remembrance poppy. While remembering those who have passed, it is important to look towards a future where we can live alongside wildlife so that the efforts of the past will not be in vain.

Final day of my for

Here is a photo of a turkeytail (Trametes versicolor), one of the many fungi I saw on my walks. Interestingly this particular species was once used as decoration on tables and hats.

I also wish to thank all who have donated money to this important cause and if you haven't already you still have time by going to:

Day 1 of my for

As it is also I am sharing a squirrel that was seen today on my walk. This cheeky little one stole some nuts from a crow, an example of what is known in ecology as kleptoparasitism.

Remember there is still time to sponsor me @ justgiving.com/fundraising/nick-plumb1

I'm back, and just in time for

The common crossbill (Loxia curvirostra) is a bird that I have wanted to see for what feels like an age and I'm very excited to say that I have seen my first one this bird weekend!

They have mandibles that cross at the tip giving it the name crossbill and allows them to extract seeds from conifer cones. Therefore they are found commonly in habitats with adequate conifer trees and best seen flying around tree tops or by pools of water when drinking.
