Desert covers 70% of Australia but you won't find the great sandy expanses like the Sahara, Nabib or Gobi. Our deserts have enormous floral diversity and can literally bloom because the monsoon over northern Australia and the influence of cyclones can deliver occasional but enormous amounts of rain. Here are ten desert landscapes that show Australian deserts are dry but not desolate

A morning out with the Go Pro's ultra-wide angle lens at Male's fishing boat harbour and markets. An easy hassle-free way to capture interesting people scenes in crowded conditions. The size of a matchbox, it fits in your palm and you can get off shots unobtrusively. For someone like me who's uncomfortable poking a camera toward people, its an enjoyable way to capture people going about their business

This is mesmerizing. I dropped in on a school of feeding Sergeant Fish - hovered among them. They ignored me while they fed and swayed in the current. So sharp and vivid - some flat screen TV manufacturer should buy this from me as a demo

Still in Male', Maldives but its time for a reminder that Australia has some pretty good beachfront, too. Is it possible to settle on a top ten seascapes in Australia? Not likely, but here are ten of my favourites from Port Douglas, North Queensland to Recherche Bay in Tasmania. No doubt there will be many more as I drift away from the eastern states to sample the coastlines of SA, WA and the Territory

Old Friday Mosque - is the oldest mosque in the Maldives dating back to 1656. Its made of coral stone decorated with intricate carvings that hold the eye so well you almost don't notice the rather ugly corrugated iron roof. The inside is famed for its fine lacquer-work and elaborate carvings ...

Angsana and Banyan Tree resorts are in North Male' Atoll and a short fast boat ride from the capital, Male'. Island resort tourism is to the Maldives as oil is to the Middle East - in a somewhat less lucrative way. Still, Maldivians rely on these sorts of places to lure the tourist dollars and its easy to see why its working. Here is a sample ...

Lonely Planet got it right - Male is an experience rather than a succession of must-see sights. Anyone looking for big ticket items will be disappointed but its bustling street scene reveals its little secrets if you have the time and inclination to just roam the Maldives' labyrinthine capital. Little hole-in-the-wall businesses, balcony cafes among the tree tops and taller colourful buildings towering over the narrow streets ... each day is an adventure with a surprise or two. And there's always a café refuge to retreat to from the motorcycle madness

They demand attention ... if they're not zooming along the streets in streams, they're parked in droves. Someone's done a great marketing job in Male. The 'sustainable-planet' me sees a priceless opportunity to turn the place into a motor vehicle-free zone - electric public transport and service vehicles; the rest on bicycles! Its only two square kilometres!! And let's face it, the Maldives has a vested interest in keeping the sea levels where they are!
