January 18, 2005. In a massive hangar near Toulouse, France, Airbus puts on a full theater style reveal for its new giant, the A380. Dancers, dry ice, big lights, and then the curtain drops as thousands of guests watch the world’s largest passenger jet make its first public appearance, with top European leaders in the audience.

This airplane was built to be a statement. Two full passenger decks, a wingspan just under 80 meters, and room for well over 500 passengers, with Airbus certifying it to a maximum capacity of 853. It was Airbus betting that the future of long haul travel would be huge jets moving big crowds between the world’s busiest airports.

The reveal was only the beginning. The first A380 prototype went on to make its first flight from Toulouse a few months later, the jet entered airline service in 2007, and production ultimately ended in 2021 with the final delivery going to Emirates. Love it or hate the business case, the A380 became an icon, and passengers still talk about how quiet and spacious it feels.

January 6, 1926. In Berlin, a new airline brand was born: the first “Luft Hansa,” created through the merger of Junkers Luftverkehr and Deutsche Aero Lloyd. That moment is the reason Lufthansa marks its centennial today.

Just three months later, on April 6, 1926, Lufthansa’s first aircraft took off on its maiden flight, kicking off a story that would span breakthroughs, setbacks, and multiple “new beginnings” over the next century. Lufthansa also notes that today’s company traces its legal roots to the “second Lufthansa,” reestablished in 1953, with flight operations restarting in 1955.

For 2026, Lufthansa says the anniversary will be visible in a big way, including a special six aircraft anniversary fleet, led by a Boeing 787 9 wearing an oversized crane design. The airline is also using the milestone to reflect on its history under the motto “We are the Journey.”

A QUICK ECO FACT FOR THE WEEK !!!

In 2007, Air Mauritius took off with a simple yet powerful idea:
for every flight that leaves the runway, a tree takes root in Mauritius or Rodrigues.

Through a beautiful partnership with the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation (MWF), the One Takeoff, One Tree programme plants native and endemic trees that help restore our lost forests, protect our unique biodiversity, and shelter endangered species like the Rodrigues Warbler and the Rodrigues Fruit Bat.

Over the past decade, more than 89,000 trees have already been planted, around 6,000 new ones every year. Each one stands as a quiet symbol of truth, hope, and sustainability.

Because with every flight forward, Mauritius grows back stronger.

Every small step counts. Every tree matters. Together, we can grow a greener island.
