Pascal Lagesse Mauritian Artist

Project 195 is a historic global creative movement by 13AM Studio with the mission to unite artists from every single country on Earth. The project aims to break down international barriers, spotlight underrepresented cultures, and build the world's first global art collection featuring all 195 nations. I am so happy to be part of this initiative.

Introducing Artist 363 | Pascal Lagesse Mauritian Artist 🇲🇺

Pascal Lagesse is a self-taught painter based from Mauritius, whose artistic practice spans more than four decades. Inspired by the landscapes, people and cultural heritage of his island home, he has developed a distinctive visual style known as Zafer; a vibrant artistic language characterised by colourful geometric forms, bold outlines and expressive compositions. His work frequently celebrates iconic elements of Mauritian life, from the dodo and dramatic mountain ranges to coastal scenes and everyday moments rooted in local culture.

Influenced by artists such as Vincent van Gogh and Friedensreich Hundertwasser, as well as the rich visual traditions of Aboriginal Australian art, Pascal’s paintings sit at the crossroads of Neo-Expressionism, Pattern Art, Fauvism and Naïve Folk Art. Through his joyful use of colour and unmistakable sense of place, he creates work that feels both deeply personal and universally relatable, exploring themes of belonging, memory and identity.

Pascal becomes our first artist representing Mauritius in Project 195, bringing a unique artistic perspective shaped by island life and cultural storytelling to our growing global creative movement.

The Beautiful Risk of Showing Your Work: A Solo Exhibition in Mauritius

There is a particular kind of fear that many artists know. It is not the fear of the blank canvas. That one I have made peace with over the years, since when inspiration is away, I watch TV while waiting for its return. What I want to talk about is the fear of opening a venue's doors, hanging your work on the walls, and standing beside it while strangers decide what they think of it and of you. A solo exhibition is exactly that. It is one of the most frightening things I do, and at the same time...

Like many, I have a great fondness for Rodrigues. The road that leads to Port-Sud-Est is one of the most beautiful on the island. We discover a huge lagoon that stretches for kilometres, as well as Hermitage Island, which is so different from the others. The bus descends to the sea under the curious eye of a yellow cow. Nothing more normal!

Kouma boukou dimounn, mo ena enn latandress pour Rodrig. Larout ki al Porsides se enn bann pli zoli larout dan sa lil-la. Ou dekouver enn extra bel lagon ki tal lor bann kilomet ek osi lil Ermitaz ki telman diferan ek lezot zil. Bis pe desann ver lamer alor ki enn vas zonn pe louk li ek kiriozite. Pena pli normal ki sa !

The Impostor in my Studio - A well-known syndrome

There is a particular silence in the studio after I finish a painting. For a moment, I see only what is in front of me; the colours, the dark little marks, the patterns I have spent more than twenty years learning to make. And then another voice arrives, quieter and colder than the first. "This is not real art", it says. "You are not a real artist. There is an impostor in my studio, and this is a well-known syndrome! One day, someone will stand in front of this canvas and finally tell you the truth."

And I dread this day.

I have lived with that voice for most of my life. It does not...

Leaving my car service appointment in Pailles, I found myself at the roundabout leading to the ring road. There, I suddenly pictured my house standing where the roundabout is today: a beautiful blue-roofed cottage surrounded by mountains. I imagined myself feeding my chickens, leaning against a coconut tree. And of course, I had a pink beard!

Kan mo’nn kit garaz akot mo masinn ti pe fer servicing mo finn ariv akot enn ronpwin ki lor larout « Ring road ». Mo finn mazinn mo lakaz dan plas sa ronpwin-la, enn lakaz ek enn twa ble antoure ek so montagn. Mo finn mazinn mwa pe donn manze poul, apiye ek enn pie koko. Normal, mo ti ena enn labarb roz !

Pope Francis, Saint Francis, and the Dodos - A Painting's Journey to the Vatican

I have always been fascinated by religions and beliefs, yet I have never been entirely able to define what my own beliefs truly are. Even when I search deep within myself, the answer remains elusive, slipping away just as I think I've grasped it. I am not a religious person in the conventional sense, yet I speak to God every single day in my mind and through my art. The God I address belongs to no specific religion...
