Mrauk U is an archaeologically important town in northern Rakhine State, Myanmar. From 1430 until 1785, it was the capital of the Mrauk U Kingdom, the most important and powerful Rakhine kingdom. As the kingdom prospered, the kings, ministers and peasants built many pagodas and temples around the town to reflect their faith.

When the city finally fell in 1784, it was abandoned and largely forgotten. The temples were swallowed by the jungle. Today it’s a sleepy town that is only starting to receive more tourists. But the temples are still as amazing.

Old man smoking a big traditional cheroot in Bagan, Myanmar. The cheroot is a cylindrical cigar that is traditional in Myanmar and India. In the old days it was even thought to keep malaria away. He was smoking his cheroot in silence, but you can see from his eyes that he's seen a lot during his life.

Getting ready for a new day. This photograph was taken in Mrauk U which is an archaeologically important town in northern Myanmar (Burma). In the background is Andaw-thein Temple. It's interesting to see how people live their normal lives among these ancient temples. Flying kites and washing themselves in the small pond next to the temple.

In Asia it's common to see and smell people burning trashes at morning or evening. While I don't prefer it otherwise, for photography it creates stunning atmosphere as the rising sun hits the smoke.
