Freedom of expression—that is, the right to freely express one’s opinions—is one of the fundamental freedoms that form the pillars of democracy. Guaranteeing and respecting this right fosters the emergence of an open and tolerant society committed to the rule of law. Daniel Rakotoseheno, known as Dany Be, the author of this photograph, never ceased to proclaim this—through his photography, of course—loud and clear, making it a vital principle and a driving force in the society in which he lived.
