Raw Cam is a photographic series exploring the aftermath of urban destruction carried out by authorities across several areas of Rabat, with a particular focus on the Ocean neighborhood (L’Océan). Through fragments of demolished homes, abandoned objects, and wounded streets, the project documents not only the physical disappearance of a place, but also the erasure of memory, belonging, and social identity.
Many families were displaced or relocated to suburban apartment complexes in exchange for what officials described as a “symbolic contribution.” Others accepted financial compensation that residents themselves often describe as far below the real value of the land — a sacrifice made under pressure, with little room to refuse.
These demolitions, justified in the name of tourism, investment, and urban redevelopment, left behind more than rubble. They fractured communities, interrupted histories, and transformed entire neighborhoods into silent construction sites awaiting a new identity.
Raw Cam does not attempt to speak for the people of L’Océan. Instead, it listens — to walls before they vanish, to debris after impact, and to the lingering presence of those who once called these spaces home.
