yn Wild: On the road and 'round the corner…

Travelling for both business and pleasure throughout Europe, Africa, Asia and North America, Maralyn has had the opportunity to cook in a variety of eating establishments. Some of her cooking adventures have involved buying live goats and chickens from markets in Rwanda in Africa; cooking alongside the Akha hilltribe in Northern Thailand; making chocolate cake over a campfire in the Congo, helping prep food at truck stops in India and Vietnam; cooking for villagers in Yunnan province in China, and making dinner for a group of tourists in Tana Toraja, Sulawesi, Indonesia. Maralyn gained her skills in the culinary arts by connecting with chefs and cooks in hotel kitchens and restaurants while travelling through over 30 countries. In Vancouver, her cooking skills were further honed, learning from friends - local cooks and chefs who worked for some of Vancouver’s top restaurateurs such as Umberto Menghi. Maralyn has a special interest in creating exotic spice blends from around the world. She enjoys bringing the colours, flavours and aromas of the old-world spice bazaars to her cooking. She also teaches pop-up cooking classes showing participants how to whip up a culinary adventure in their own kitchens!

Do you ever have one of those days when you’re trying to get breakfast on the table and you have to ask your husband for help? And the instructions you give him are “Sweetie, can you please do me a favour and keep the camel out of the kitchen.”

When I wanted to drive across, the Sahara Desert, I never imagined anyone would let me do it. And my husband (sat in the back seat of our vehicle), was hoping nobody actually would let me do it. Until that point he never knew his wedding vows - for better or for worse - would mean this!
So, off we went across Erg Chebbi a short distance from the border with Algeria. The striking colors and towering peaks, of the sand dunes here make for iconic views of this part of the Sahara desert. And there were lots more adventures to come!

One of the world’s most fabulous bakeries can be found here!
From 1311 the Monastery of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, in Palermo, Sicily was the home of Dominican nuns. In 2014, the last remaining cloistered nun of Santa Caterina left Palermo.
The convent, situated around a beautiful citrus-tree lined cloister, was subsequently turned into a museum. On entering, it feels as if you have stepped back in time, surrounded by intricate wood carvings, plaster work and mosaics, where a sense of peace and calmness prevails. And there is also a special surprise. There is the most magnificent bakery located here, “I Segreti del Chiostro” (The Secrets of the Cloister), which specializes in traditional Sicilian convent pastries, such as cannoli and minne di vergine. These are ancient recipes previously kept secret by the cloistered nuns, but now visitors are able to indulge in these delicious sweets and pastries!

I always feel so at home here - and in my other favourite destination, Morocco. And it turns out there might be a very good reason for this feeling - these are places where I indeed may have roots! DNA imprinted on these lands.
