What struck me most during my time at Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary - BLES 🐘🌿 [OFFICIAL PAGE]] wasn’t only the elephants. It was the relationship between each elephant and their mahout.

After watching them together for a few days, I started to feel that the mahouts need the elephants almost as much as the elephants need them.

There is so little obvious communication. No fuss, no constant instruction. They just seem to know each other. A look, a movement, a change in pace, and somehow the other understands.

All of the mahouts look out for all of the elephants, but some of those individual bonds are incredibly special. Some feel almost parental, others more like siblings or best friends. Each relationship is completely its own.

The mahouts are there to keep the elephants safe and cared for throughout the day, but it was so clear to me that the elephants give something enormous back in return.

It is one of the most tender and unexpected things I witnessed at BLES, and honestly, I could have watched them together for hours.

Baby Precious and Sweetheart, just casually having a little trunk bump.

I’ve been trying to work out how to begin sharing my time at BLES, Boon Lott’s Elephant Sanctuary in Sukhothai Thailand, because four days there had a far bigger impact on me than I expected.

I went to photograph the elephants. What I came away with was so much more.

Over those few days I got to know them, watched them slowly get used to me being around, learned their individual personalities and heard the stories of the lives they had before arriving at BLES.

One of the things that affected me most was watching the relationships between the elephants and their mahouts. I wasn’t prepared for how extraordinary those bonds would be. The trust, affection and understanding between them was beautiful to witness.

BLES is an incredible place not only because of what it gives these elephants, many of whom have endured very difficult lives, but because of what it gives the people who work there, the people who visit and the wider community around it.

Katherine’s warmth and generosity seem to run through everything she has created there.

I came home with thousands of photographs, hours of video and so many stories I want to tell. So there will be a LOT more elephants appearing here.

And there is also a rather special BLES announcement coming soon that I am ridiculously excited about…

A leopard was top of my wish list for this Tanzania safari. I’d seen them before, but never come home with a photograph I really loved.

Then we found this beautiful female resting in a tree. She had quite the belly, though we couldn’t tell whether she’d just had a big feed or was pregnant. Luckily for us, she seemed perfectly content to stay put: looking left, looking right, then straight down my lens.

I love seeing every animal on safari, but getting to sit and admire her for a while was something special.

You pop in for a mango and come out with a plastic storage box and a chicken. 😂

No souvenir stalls here. This is where local people do their everyday shopping, with fruit, veg, spices, household essentials and meat counters that leave very little to the imagination.

I love a wander through a market when I’m travelling. There’s so much to take in, and always something that makes me stop for a closer look.

A little late for World Rhino Day, but these four deserved their moment.

I was travelling home from Tanzania on the day, with memory cards full of photographs, including these white rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater last week.

Seeing them was incredible. But what also made me very happy was something I’d never seen on safari before: a ranger carefully managing the safari trucks.

Nobody went off-road. Nobody crowded the rhinos. Every few minutes, he moved the line along so everyone had a chance to see them while giving the animals their space.

As a photographer, of course I want a beautiful image. But how we get it matters.

Well done, Ngorongoro. More of this, please.
