Highlands & Beyond

Highlands & Beyond From misty Highland landscapes to roads less travelled — this is my corner of the world through a lens.

Scotland's stolen my heart and I've made zero attempts to get it back, but Luxembourg and a few other favourite haunts still sneak in now and then.

Marwick Head, Orkney 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Layered sandstone cliffs rising straight from the Atlantic, carved over millennia into arches and geos by the relentless swell. This stretch of coastline is also an RSPB reserve, home to thousands of seabirds in summer.

Glen Coe — just before the Three Sisters

This panorama was taken on the A82 through Glen Coe, shortly before reaching the Three Sisters ridgeline. Low cloud was covering the peaks at the time, with mist settling into the corries above the moorland.

Glen Coe is one of the most visited locations in the Scottish Highlands, known for its dramatic glacial valley and its role in Scottish history.

This image is a 7-shot panorama, stitched together to capture the full width of the glen.

Marwick Head, Orkney — where the Atlantic has been carving its way through these sandstone cliffs for millennia. Layer upon layer of ancient sediment, and beneath it all, the sea still hard at work.

A long exposure to catch the water as it surges through this natural arch — smoothing the chaos of the swell into something almost silent, against rock that hasn't moved in an age.

Orkney rarely gets the same attention as the Highlands, but wilder coastline is hard to find.

📍 Midhope Castle, Hopetoun Estate, South Queensferry

Midhope Castle, better known to Outlander fans as Lallybroch — Jamie Fraser's ancestral home. This 16th-century tower house sits quietly on the Hopetoun Estate, its archway and crow-stepped gables looking every bit as they did on screen.

No sign of Jamie today, though the light through those clouds made for a proper dramatic entrance of its own.

Ben Nevis Range

A different way to take in Scotland — this one from the Ben Nevis Range, looking out at two paragliders threading their way between the clouds. From up here, even the glens and Munros beneath them look small.

There's something about watching folk hang-glide past at altitude that puts the scale of these hills into perspective all over again. Same landscape, entirely new vantage point.

Loch Achtrochtan, with the Three Sisters of Glen Coe rising behind it — one of Scotland's most photographed glens, and it's easy to see why. The play of light on Bidean nam Bian's ridgeline, the still water catching every reflection, the burn winding through the foreground... this glen never runs out of ways to stop you in your tracks.

Eight frames stitched together to try and do the scale of it justice.

Uig Bay, Isle of Skye

Captain Fraser's Folly stands watch over Uig Bay — a 19th-century tower built purely for show by a controversial local landowner, with no military purpose despite its castle-like appearance. Below, the village and harbour stretch out along the shore, framed by shifting light and heavy Skye skies. This spot never fails to draw me back.

Ardvreck Castle, Loch Assynt

The ruins of a 15th-century stronghold on the shores of Loch Assynt — and one of Scotland's more haunting legends. It's said the laird struck a bargain with the Devil to help build the castle, promising his daughter's hand in marriage as payment. Rather than go through with it, she threw herself from the tower into the loch below. Her body was never found, and locals still speak of weeping heard around the water on quiet evenings. Standing here, it's easy to see why the story has lasted so long.

Point of Ardnamurchan, Scotland
Crystal-clear waters meet ancient volcanic rock at the westernmost point of the British mainland. The colours here shift from deep Atlantic blue to a striking turquoise over the shallow rock shelves — a quiet reminder of how remote and unspoilt this coastline still is.

The view from Calton Hill across Scotland’s capital: St Andrew’s House stands proud in the foreground, framed by lush greenery, while the Old Town skyline unfolds beneath a dramatic, cloud-laden sky. The Old Observatory House crowns the hill on the right, and the shopping galleries of St James Quarter peek through the trees below. Princes Street cuts through the heart of the scene, with the Balmoral Hotel’s famous clock tower, the Scott Monument and Edinburgh Castle all visible in the distance.
Seven individual frames were stitched together to capture the full breadth of this stunning view.
