Republican Vilnius Psychiatric Hospital is the oldest and largest psychiatric hospital in Lithuania. The massive yellow-brick complex opened in 1903 in Naujoji Vilnia, when the city was still part of the Russian Empire. It was originally built for 1,000 patients and served several governorates across the region.
The hospital is famous for its eerie architecture and huge park-like territory. From above, the buildings were designed in the shape of a double-headed eagle — a symbol of the Russian Empire at the time.
Today the hospital is still fully active and continues to operate as one of the main psychiatric centers in Lithuania.
According to local stories, underground tunnels once connected different parts of the complex, allowing staff to move patients between buildings during winter without going outside. The territory is so large that many people mistake it for an abandoned town rather than a hospital.
