Happy Sinhala & Tamil New Year to everyone celebrating!

In the wild, protection is more than instinct; it’s backed by fascinating biology. In species like the spotted hyena, females are dominant and lead highly structured clans. Research shows that mothers invest heavily in their cubs: they nurse them with exceptionally nutrient-rich milk (one of the highest protein and fat contents among land carnivores), defend them aggressively from predators and even other hyenas, and often raise them in communal dens where multiple adults help keep watch.

Cubs are also born relatively well-developed, with open eyes and even small teeth; traits that reflect both early competition and the need for rapid survival. Despite this, mortality rates can be high, which is why such intense maternal protection is crucial.

The Approach

In the Masai Mara, I was experimenting with a super low-angle perspective using my Nikon Z9 and a 70–200mm f/2.8, composing through the flipped rear LCD. Just a few feet away, this magnificent male lion was feeding on a buffalo kill. Then, in a moment I will never forget, he approached our safari vehicle for shelter. I only realized how close he was when I sensed his presence beside us. That instant sent a chill through me.

What started as a technical experiment became a heart-stopping encounter with one of Africa’s most powerful predators.

A ring-tailed civet on the move after a successful hunt, carrying a Mayor’s Spiny Mouse (an endemic species of rodent restricted to the southwestern rainforest of Sri Lanka).

We captured this just after departing on our very first safari from the Thalgasmankada DWC Bungalow. A simple reminder that Yala can surprise you in so many ways. And it’s only a hint of what the park holds, Yala has many more rare gems like this waiting to be shown.
