The Historical Kadadora Temple:
Submerged due to the Kotmale Reservoir project under the Mahaweli Development Programme in the late 1970s, the Kadadora Sri Priyabimbarama Viharaya stands as a poignant monument that reflects the complex relationship between Sri Lanka's history, folklore, and modern development.
Located on the banks of the Kotmale Oya in the Nuwara Eliya district, the temple's history dates back to the ancient era of kings. According to local legends, the name "Kadadora" is deeply tied to a story about Prince Dutugemunu. After a disagreement with his father, King Kavanthissa, the prince fled from Ruhuna and hid in the Kotmale area. It is said that before crossing the Kotmale river, he left his sword on the riverbank. Folklore states that the area came to be known as "Kadadora," derived from the meaning "the ferry where the sword was kept." ⚔️👑
Around 1985, as the reservoir was filled, the centuries-old Kadadora Temple and its surrounding village disappeared beneath the water. However, thanks to the intervention of the Department of Archaeology and dedicated local residents, many precious antiquities and sacred artifacts were saved. Buddha statues, relic caskets, and ancient, intricately carved wooden door frames were rescued. To enshrine these sacred objects, the New Kadadora Sri Priyabimbarama Viharaya was built in the newly relocated Kadadora village, safely above the reservoir's waters. 🙏✨
During severe droughts, when the water level of the Kotmale Reservoir drops significantly, something magical happens. The ruined stupa and structural remnants of the old Kadadora Temple rise from the depths, offering a breathtaking and surreal sight. For the former residents who lost their ancestral homes, this reappearance is a deeply emotional moment—a fleeting reunion with their past that renews the memory of the priceless heritage they sacrificed in the name of development. 🍂💧
