🐆 Sri Lankan Leopard Day 🇱🇰
Today we celebrate and raise awareness for one of Sri Lanka's greatest natural treasures, the Sri Lankan Leopard (Panthera pardus kotiya), a magnificent big cat found nowhere else on Earth.
This collection brings together some of my favorite leopard photographs, captured over the years of visiting Yala National Park. Every encounter has been different, reminding me how privileged we are to share this island with such an extraordinary predator.
Why is Sri Lankan Leopard Day important?
• The Sri Lankan leopard is an endemic subspecies, meaning it exists only in Sri Lanka.
• Scientists estimate there are fewer than 1,000 mature individuals remaining in the wild, making every leopard vital to the survival of the population.
• As the island's apex predator, the leopard plays a critical role in maintaining healthy ecosystems by naturally regulating prey populations.
• Despite being fully protected by law, leopards continue to face serious threats, including habitat loss and fragmentation, wire snares set for other animals, road accidents, retaliation following human-wildlife conflict, and illegal killings.
• Conserving the Sri Lankan leopard also means protecting the forests, grasslands, and countless other species that depend on the same habitats.
Sri Lankan Leopard Day is more than a celebration, it's a reminder that the future of this incredible animal depends on the choices we make today. Through conservation, responsible tourism, scientific research, and public awareness, we can help ensure that future generations will still have the chance to witness these remarkable cats roaming free in Sri Lanka's wild landscapes.
