Jerdon's leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni)
@ Yala

Jerdon's leafbird (Chloropsis jerdoni) is a species of leafbird found in forest and woodland in India and Sri Lanka.

The male is green-bodied with a yellow-tinged head, black face and throat. It has a blue moustachial line. The female differs in that it has a greener head and blue throat, and young birds are like the female but without the blue throat patch.

Like other leafbirds, the call of Jerdon's leafbird consists of a rich mixture of imitations of the calls of various other species of birds. They are very shy of water, will only come down to drink for very short periods and are quick to flee.

Pheasant- tailed Jacana (Hydrophasianus chirurgus)
National Park

Like other jacanas, they have elongated toes and nails that enable them to walk on floating vegetation in shallow lakes, their preferred habitat. They may also swim or wade in water while foraging mainly for invertebrate prey.

WHEN IGNORANCE IS BLISS: Driving Mannar's Birds Away

The Wildlife & Nature Protection Society (WNPS) is appalled to learn that so-called birdwatchers from the Capital are visiting Mannar armed with drones, endangering the continued stay, and future migration, to this unique place of these special, rare and beautiful species of birds. Most are migrants, some flying in from thousands of miles away, to feed and breed in the hitherto haven of Mannar. Flamingoes are the most noticeable, hundreds of them, straining the briny waters for the shrimp they thrive on. However, there are many more, and almost every year, new species are recorded here; a wonder not just for local ornithologists, but those from overseas too, bringing with them much-needed foreign exchange to this country.

Even though this is in a supposed High-Security Zone, it is reliably learned that these drones are flown at low altitudes to avoid detection by radar. This, of course, causes even more disturbance to the feeding birds. It has been proven that the noise, and a resemblance to aerial predators, cause great anxiety to these species. If they leave, they will never come again, a high price to pay so that the privileged few from Colombo can get their kicks.

We appeal to the relevant authorities, and to any of these drone fliers who have a conscience, to immediately stop this destructive practice. Let us not forget that when the salinity of the waters of the Bundala National Park were diluted by the diverted waters of the Lunugamvehera, the flocks of flamingoes for which it was famous, and other species, headed North. If we harass them, and the other migrants, in this way, they will head even further north, out of this country. Is this what we want for Sri Lanka?

Stripe-necked mongoose (Urva vitticolla)

A uncommon and rarely seen mongoose species native to forests and shrublands from southern India to Sri Lanka.

It is rusty brown to grizzled grey and is easily distinguished by the black stripe that runs laterally on both sides of its neck. It is larger than the other species of Mangoose found in Sri Lanka.

Its short tail is mostly black, but grey at the base. Head to body length is 46-50 cm with tail length of 32 cm. Males are larger and heavier than females with the weight of 3.1 kg. Females weigh about 1.7 k.

This mum and pup were photographed on the Heenwewa road of Yala National Park.

The Sri Lankan sloth bear (Melursus ursinus inornatus) is believed to be a subspecies of the sloth bear and is found mainly in lowland dry forest of Sri Lanka.

The Sri Lankan sloth bear is highly threatened, with the wild population possibly being as low as a 500 in many isolated populations. Destruction of dry-zone natural forest is its main threat because unlike other large Sri Lankan animals, the Sri Lankan sloth bear is highly dependent on natural forests for its food source.

This picture was captured at Wilpattu National Park probably the best place to catch a glimpse of these beautiful animals.
