The Brahminy Kite (Haliastur indus), known locally in Sinhala as the Bhamunu Piyakussa or Brahmana Ukussa, is a common and unmistakable resident bird of prey in Sri Lanka. Adults are instantly recognizable by their striking chestnut-brown plumage, brilliantly contrasted by a pure white head and breast. You can commonly spot these medium-sized raptors soaring gracefully over coastal areas, lagoons, mangroves, and inland wetlands. They are frequently seen near rivers, large lakes (or "tanks"), and paddy fields across the island, but are less commonly found in the central highlands. Brahminy Kites are opportunistic feeders and scavengers. They primarily eat fish, crabs, small vertebrates, and carrion, often swooping down to pluck food items directly from the surface of the water or nearby land. Because they are widespread, you can spot them while visiting many of the island's prominent wildlife and wetland destinations, including:Coastal Lagoons: Such as those found in the Bundala National ParkNational Parks: Notably Wilpattu National Park and Kumana National ParkWetlands & Estuaries: Areas like Muthurajawela Marsh or the inland tanks surrounding the Cultural Triangle (e.g., Habarana)

இலங்கையில் பரவலாகக் காணப்படும் இந்தப் பறவை, தமிழில் செம்பருந்து (Semparunthu) என்று அழைக்கப்படுகிறது. இதன் தலை, கழுத்து மற்றும் மார்புப் பகுதிகள் தூய வெள்ளை நிறத்திலும், உடலின் ஏனைய பகுதிகள் மற்றும் இறக்கைகள் செந்நிறத்திலும் (chestnut-brown) காணப்படும். பறக்கும்போது இறக்கைகளின் முனைகள் கருப்பு நிறத்தில் தெரிவதை வைத்து இதை எளிதாக அடையாளம் காணலாம். இலங்கையில் இவை நீர்நிலைகளுக்கு அருகிலேயே பெரும்பாலும் வாழ்கின்றன.கடலோரப் பகுதிகள், காயல்கள், குளங்கள் மற்றும் ஏரிகளின் ஓரங்களில் இவற்றைக் காணலாம். குறிப்பாக இலங்கையின் உலர் மண்டலப் பகுதிகளான மன்னார், திருகோணமலை மற்றும் அம்பாந்தோட்டை போன்ற மாவட்டங்களில் இவை அதிகளவில் காணப்படுகின்றன. செம்பருந்து ஒரு அனைத்துண்ணி மற்றும் இறந்த விலங்குகளை உண்ணும் வழக்கம் கொண்டது (Scavenger). முக்கியமாக செத்த மீன்கள், நண்டுகள், தவளைகள், ஓணான்கள் மற்றும் சிறிய பூச்சிகளை வேட்டையாடும்.

வாத்து போன்ற பிற நீர்ப்பறவைகளைப் போலன்றி, இவற்றின் இறக்கைகள் முழுமையாக நீர்ப்புகாதவை அல்ல. இதனால் நீரில் மூழ்கி மீன் பிடிக்கும்போது உடல் எடை அதிகரித்து, ஆழமாகச் செல்ல உதவுகிறது. வேட்டைக்கு பின் இறக்கைகளை விரித்து வெயிலில் உலர்த்தும்.
இவை நீருக்கடியில் 45 மீட்டர் ஆழம் வரை சென்று மீன் பிடிக்கும் வல்லமை கொண்டவை. இவற்றின் கால்கள் துடுப்புப் போல அகலமாக இருப்பதால் வேகமாக நீந்த முடிகிறது. இவை சில நேரங்களில் கூட்டமாகச் சேர்ந்து மீன்களை ஒரு பகுதிக்கு விரட்டிச் சென்று வேட்டையாடும் (Social Fishing). நீர்நிலைகளுக்கு அருகில் உள்ள மரங்களில் குச்சிகளைக் கொண்டு தட்டையான கூடுகளைக் கட்டும். பெரும்பாலும் கொக்குகள் மற்றும் நாரைகளுடன் இணைந்து ஒரே மரத்தில் பல கூடுகளை அமைக்கும்.

In Sri Lanka, the Little Cormorant (Microcarbo niger) is widely known in Tamil as நீர்க்காகம் (Neerkagam), which literally translates to "water crow". It is the most common and smallest member of the cormorant family found across the island's wetlands, lakes, and coastal lagoons. A small, duck-like waterbird, roughly 50 cm in length. It has glistening all-black plumage during the breeding season, which becomes more brownish in non-breeding periods or in juveniles. They are expert divers that hunt fish underwater. After fishing, they are famously seen perched on rocks or branches with their wings outstretched to dry because their feathers are not fully waterproof. Commonly found in village tanks, rivers, and marshes throughout the lowlands, including the North Central and Northern provinces like Jaffna and Mannar.
