The ancient monastery dates back to the Roman period, located above the Assi river source in Hermel.
It is believed that Saint Maroun, the founder of the Maronite church lived in the monastery with his followers in the 4th Century AD.
Assi River known globally as the Orontes River, is a major 571-kilometer waterway. It originates in the Beqaa Valley of Lebanon, flows north through Syria, and empties into the Mediterranean in Turkey.

The Monastery of Mar Lichaa, Qannoubine.
Dating back to the 14th century, the old Mar Lichaa monastery is one of the oldest in Lebanon. Carved into the rocks, it blends naturally with the cliff and mountains.
In 1695, it became the birthplace of the Lebanese Maronite Order, one of the most influential monastic orders in the Maronite Church.
