I don’t usually use this profile to talk about myself. In journalism, that’s almost a cardinal sin. It can even make people question your professionalism.

But today, I want to do it anyway.

Because when I started out on this path, I would have loved to read something like this — especially during the many times I nearly gave up.

My colleague Sviat has a tattoo that reads “Doubt.” But the “ubt” is crossed out in red. What’s left is just: Do.

That’s what this is about.

Just do it. Jump into the pool. As my friend Marta Marcilla — a woman I deeply admire for her strength — always says: there is always, always water.

I was born in Montevideo, Uruguay. A small country with a traditional mindset, but full of people with big dreams. As a kid, I always felt I was meant for something different. I ripped off the lace dresses my grandmother bought me. I played in the street with the boys. My grandmother had dreamed of a daughter — a princess. What she got instead was a dragon.

I studied Marketing and PR. By 26, I was Marketing Director at a well-known cookie factory in Uruguay. And I felt empty. So I quit. Sold my car. Moved to Spain with no plan — just the certainty that I had to go.

There, I took a photography course. Day one, I told my professor: no portraits. I wanted landscapes. I wanted National Geographic. He laughed. I understand why now — because the turning point of that course was a portrait assignment, and it led me to a homeless man in Barcelona’s Gothic Quarter. That encounter became a two-year project. That project became a book. That book reached the hands of Pope Francis. ⬇️

Azera’s story is one of thousands of stories of survivors of sexual violence used as a weapon of war.

According to the International Bar Association Parliamentary Group on International Law, Justice and Accountability (APPG), more than 120,000 people were subjected to sexual violence in Tigray, northern Ethiopia, over a two-year period (2020–2022).

These survivors continue to suffer in the shadows of a society that amplifies or silences stories depending on political agendas and interests.

On the morning of Friday, July 3, 24 hours after the Russian Federation’s attack on the Ukrainian capital, a residential building lay in ruins after being struck by a missile. The attack left 27 people dead and more than 70 injured.

Twenty-seven people who did not live to see the sunrise on this Friday, July 3. 27 people who will never return to work or school. 27 people who can no longer enjoy their families or the summer, despite the hardships of war.

27 people reduced to numbers in a bloody war that seems to have no end.

27... 37…..47…..67….87……numbers that each represent a life, a story, a future.

In the early hours of Saturday, June 20, the Russian Federation dropped two aerial bombs on a neighborhood in Kharkiv Oblast, killing one person, injuring nine others, and causing severe damage to residential buildings.

The UN Humanitarian Coordinator in Ukraine, Matthias Schmale, together with the OCHA team, visited the site, as well as Shevchenkove, a village in Kharkiv Oblast whose population lives under constant threat from kamikaze drone attacks.

Last night, the Lavra Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was engulfed in flames as a result of a massive attack by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian capital during the early hours of Monday, June 15.

Matthias Schmale, head of the UN in Ukraine, and Chiara Dezzi, UNESCO representative, visited the site.

“There were several centimeters of water inside,” said one of the workers. This is because the water used by firefighters, combined with heavy rainfall, seeped through the roofs of the church, potentially causing damage to the artworks housed within its ceilings and walls.

Next Friday, June 19 marks the International Day for the Elimination of Sexual Violence in Conflict. But this should not be a date we remember once a year, it should be something that weighs on us every single day.

According to recent reports by Pramila Patten, the United Nations Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict, thousands of cases have been verified across multiple countries, while countless others remain unreported, silenced by fear, stigma, and the absence of justice.

Behind every number is a person whose life has been shattered. A voice that was forced into silence. A story that did not ask to become part of war.

And yet, so often, which stories are heard and which are ignored seems to depend on where someone comes from, what they believe in, or how they are labeled by the world. As if some lives carry more weight than others.

But pain does not recognize borders. Suffering does not carry a passport.

When all labels are stripped away nationality, religion, ethnicity what remains is something painfully simple: a human being who deserved safety, dignity, and to be heard.

This day is not just remembrance. It is a demand. To listen more. To care more. To refuse silence, not just today, but every day.

From Tigray to Kyiv, from Beirut to Damascus. A flash of light, a roar tearing through the air, screams, and the life they knew until that moment was over.

How do you explain to a child that they no longer have a home? How do you explain that they are now a refugee, or an IDP with no identity?

How do you explain that you no longer have a job to buy them the toys or the food they like? How do you explain that they no longer have a school to go to, or that some of their friends lying beneath the rubble will never come back?

Wars born from a hunger for power, started by those who play chess with human pieces.

A flash of light, a roar, and a scream, the last bomb of the war. But will it truly be the last?
