The camera is the strongest potential tool to build relationships – especially when one is in a foreign country. But too many people approach photography in such a way that the camera becomes an obstacle, something that intimidates both the photographer and the subject. We recognize a genuine need to help people develop both their photographic and cultural skills. We deliver our multinational and multi-decades of photographic work experience to our workshops.

Photographing Festivals Workshop, May 3, 2:00 pm

Last Saturday, we had an excellent start for the third RASKB Photography Workshop series where we covered the updated basics of photograph. Some of us came early to take photos of spring flowers found immediately behind Onsite Studios on the slope of Inwangsan. (We will cover related topics of photographing nature and scenery later in the workshop series.)

Rather than wait a full four weeks for the next workshop, we agreed to have a special workshop on Buddha’s Birthday, May 3, Tuesday, 2:00 pm.

Yesterday, I visited two temples that are conveniently located near a subway, Bomun Station, exit 1, located on Line 6 (brown). These temples, Bomun-sa and Mita-sa, were suggested by Jeremy Seligson who will be conducting a tour of various temples for the RASKB during the day. Our goal will be different from Jeremy’s tour. Jeremy will guide his group to a wonderful selection temples celebrating Buddha’s Birthday. We will be focusing on how to photograph festivals in Korea and elsewhere, with an emphasis on both photographic techniques and cross cultural human interchange strategies with other festival goers.

These temples are substantial neighborhood Buddhist centers, unique in that they are actually nunneries, with their temples going back almost a thousand years.

Being secondary in size and crowd attraction and yet offering various levels of perspective as they are built on hillsides, these temples will offer an optimum opportunities for us to try out various perspectives as well as techniques. The temples already have out their lanterns and lights for evening celebration. For those willing, we will stay into the evening hours to practice evening festival photography. For the hardy, we may search out a Korean restaurant at the end of the workshop.

Since the temples are in the shade of the late afternoon sun, I suggest that we meet a bit early. We will meet on the 2nd or 3rd floor of the Caffe Lebean coffee shop that is located right next to exit 1 of Bomun Station, from 2:00 pm. There we will review and discuss my Festival Photography white paper. Each participant will be given a hard copy as well receive a PDF copy of the white paper following the workshop.

The fee will be W60,000 donation per session, or W50,000 should you be an RAS member. If you participated in the previous series of workshops of one~two years ago, you get a W10,000 discount.

As always, I really need to get RSVPs so that I may prepare an appropriate number of white paper printouts, etc. in advance.

Of course, should you have any questions or ideas, please feel free to contact me at any time at [email protected] or 010-9099-6195.

From April 15, as part of the Royal Asiatic Society, Korea Branch (RASKB), I will be conducting monthly Saturday afternoon photography workshops, for the third time. We will cover the basics up through some technically and artistically advanced topics. Each workshop will be discreetly unique in topic matter. We will look at nature, travel, street, architecture, night, studio, macro, etc. - and possibly post processing.

Topics will be finalized by participants’ needs and interests. At the same time, there will be photo assignments for people to challenge themselves, which we will review at the next workshop. If you’re interested, please check out the below documents.

The participation donation of W60,000 (W50,000 for RASKB members) will be collected at each workshop. RSVPs are required at [email protected]. Feel free to contact me should you have any questions at my email or at 010-9099-6195.

This is first notice, a teaser perhaps:

From February, I plan to resume my monthly photographic workshops, meeting on Saturday afternoons. The venue will be my new home office and studio on the eastern slope of Inwangsan, overlooking and to the north of the Blue House. The location is literally next door to a nature reserve with incredible panoramas. The roof area is ideal for outdoor lectures and hands-on experiences and the living room has lots of natural light coming in from panorama windows on two sides of the room.

As in the past, each session will consist of a discreet topic so that one can decide if the subject matter is of interest or not. Fees will be collected at the door to keep things simple. If you wish to be put on a notification list, without any obligation, please drop me a note at [email protected].
