The Print Room

The Print Room Photographic gallery and studio with black and white darkrooms. The Print Room offers private classes in fine arts photography.

In-studio indoor and on the field lessons for outdoor on-location film photography techniques will be followed through with theory and techniques for processing film, printing on paper, mounting and framing the final print. Theory and history classes will be taught by our own or invited instructors and will cover the range of genres from photojournalism, landscape, nature, fashion, portrait, archi

tectural to abstract. Digital photography and software will be used to support publication ventures. Periodically, as part of the educational objectives of the company, The Print Room will organize exhibitions of the work of its students, instructors and fellow photographers and other artist colleagues where works will be put up for sale to the public. The company shall also produce related publications such as catalogues of exhibitions, feature books on photography and various other visual fine arts, tutoring manuals, etc. The working studio is also available for rental for private use.

When I teach flashing (pre exposure) I get the student to pick a negative where the exposure is all over the place.
Take this image by 황아림 A Rim Hwang The sky in the negative is over exposed and the rocks under, not to mention the glare at the top of the rocks.
The filter was set quite high at 4 and even with flashing the detail in the sky was missing.
Burning in at that filter would only create more contrast and the tones would be missing.
To get the final image (1st photo) flashed the paper, exposed the print on filter 4 and an extra 8 seconds on the sand. The sky and top of the rocks was then given extra time using filter 2.
A lot of work but definitely worth the effort.

The second image is a straight print with no manipulation.

This class is taught over 2,3 or 4 days, depending on the students knowledge of the darkroom, and covers composition, various studio lighting techniques, medium format camera operation, film processing and darkroom printing.

The still life class is maybe one of most difficult classes we teach. The classes vary and last from two to four days, depending on the photographers knowledge.
During the class the student/s are introduced studio flash, continuous tungsten and daylight lights, medium format cameras and reading from a light meter. Its a very challenging class for me, as much as I might want to say, God no, that looks awful, I cant, but I can direct and say yeah, thats a good start.. now what, where do you want to take it, what’s the story behind that shot?

What I enjoy about still life classes is how the student evolves, sometimes something that started so simple and laughable becomes a solo exhibition.

얼마 전 더프린트룸에서 코닥어패럴의 새로운 룩북 촬영이 진행되었습니다.

갤러리와 스튜디오는 물론, 실제로 운영 중인 암실까지 촬영 공간으로 활용하며 더프린트룸만의 분위기를 자연스럽게 담아냈습니다.

What is a contact sheet and why bother?

The simple answer is reference. A contact sheet makes it easy to see to see what is on the whole roll of film all at once.
A common mistake when printing a contact is making it too contrasty, as I said before it’s a reference to your negatives. If the contact print has too much contrast the shadows will be too black and all information in the shadows will be lost. You need to see what’s in those shadows, this will also help you with your final prints.
Personally I prefer to use filter 1.5 for my contacts and not 2 or 3 like some recommend.. but that’s my preference.

The 4th day of our black and white class, darkroom printing with pre-exposure (flashing)

I know a lot of people don’t really enjoy flashing when it comes to darkroom printing, but It’s one of the first things I teach during the printing class.
Once the settings are made, it can save a lot of time in the long run.

1. Straight print
2. Flash test
3. Final print
4. Straight print

It’s been a pretty hectic few weeks here with classes and Im struggling to keep up with my posts. Sorry about that. 😬
Last Thursday kooyoonjin dropped by to take our one day basic darkroom class where she spent a few hours learning the basics of the darkroom and how to print.
This class is ideal for anyone who wants walk into the a darkroom and come out with a couple of hand printed photographs, all you need to do is bring your own negatives or a roll of black and white film that we will process for you.
