Let's go and take a selfie with the tree this time!
Neighboring coasts might have the hype, but Cambodia’s beaches have the real vibe—zero overtourism and unbothered peace. But somehow, the internet has gone viral over the most unexpected icon: a dead tree. It has officially reached main character status and become a must photo spot when visiting Koh Rong. But why is everyone so hyped over a piece of driftwood? What makes a dead tree so special that so many meme photos also fit the occasion?
Actually long before the tree went viral, Koh Rong had already gained international recognition. The island was featured in Season 32 of the reality TV show Survivor in 2016, showcasing its raw beauty to a global audience. Known for its crystal-clear waters, powdery white sand, and laid-back atmosphere, the island has always been a natural escape, where visitors come to swim, unwind, and disconnect by the sea.
The reason this specific tree has become such a photographic phenomenon is actually quite simple: it is a masterclass in natural composition. When the weather clears and the sky turns a striking blue, the weathered branches naturally frame the landscape. With the open ocean in the background, the tree acts as an organic prop, adding depth and texture that makes the entire scene look incredibly cinematic on camera. It is the perfect anchor to help capture the vivid, true colors of Koh Rong.
What makes the whole thing even funnier is that the tree has slowly become a meme online in Cambodia’s travel scene. The tree itself is still standing there alone with nothing around it, but people have already started editing it into travel promotions, business posts, and marketing content because they know Cambodians instantly recognize the spot.
Koh Rong boasts 43 kilometers of coastline and 28 distinct beaches. Koh Rong maintained much more naure that because it avoid the massive concrete developments that have ruined other islands in Southeast Asia. In this regards, The interior of Koh Rong is a dense, wild jungle featuring hidden waterfalls, exotic birds (like hornbills), and even glowing mushrooms in the deep forest.
How Much Does Paradise Actually Cost?
Koh Rong may look like a luxury escape, but experiencing it doesn’t have to come with a high price tag. The island offers a range of options—if you’re after a premium stay, there are upscale resorts that can get quite expensive. But for students or budget travelers, Koh Rong is also affordable. Relaxing and taking photos with the iconic dead, solitary tree, swimming in glowing bioluminescent plankton at night, or hiking to hidden waterfalls are all free.
One thing to note: while luxury resorts accept cards, ATMs are almost non-existent along the beaches. It’s best to bring enough physical cash (USD or Cambodian riel) before heading to the island to avoid any inconvenience.
