MEET ‘PYCANUM RUBENS’ 🐞
In the lush landscapes of Prey Veng province, Cambodia, I spotted a fascinating insect: the Pycanum rubens, perched elegantly on a leaf.
Tessaratomids, or giant shield bugs, often resemble large stink bugs. They're known for their vibrant colors and intriguing behaviors. While most tessaratomidae hail from the Old World, a few species have made their way into the Neotropics.
Some exhibit remarkable maternal care, tending to their eggs and offspring. However, watch out! Their defensive chemicals can cause significant skin irritation and even temporary blindness if you're not careful.
These insects are strict vegetarians, but not all are harmless to plants. Some species are notorious agricultural pests, impacting crops significantly. Interestingly, in some cultures, a few tessaratomid species are also enjoyed as a culinary delicacy 😋
Nature's artistry is on full display with tessaratomids, as they are often vividly colored, adding a splash of brilliance to their surroundings.
Next time you’re exploring Cambodia’s diverse ecosystems, keep an eye out for these incredible insects! 🌍
