One that got away... This extremely rare and Red Listed Cantor's giant softshell turtle (Pelochelys cantorii) was on sale at the Vuenkham fish market in Laos, about 200 m north of the Cambodian border. By far the largest of these unique animals I have ever seen, it had been caught by a Cambodian fisher in the Mekong River in northern Steung Treng Province, Cambodia. As it was still alive and in great shape, and knowing how rare these turtles are, I tried to purchase it for release back to the Mekong, but the vendor refused to sell it to me - or even let me take it out of the cooler for proper photos. The vendor even refused my offer to triple the price they had received for it, though plainly enticed by the offer from the crazy foreigner. Sadly, I saw the turtle being loaded into the back of a Landrover later, obviously headed for a Vientiane dinner table. Size: approximately 70 cm long, 50 cm wide and 15 kgs. Photo date: May 1st, 2004.

The International School of Phnom Penh is one of my long-term clients, as I have shot their annual student and staff portraits for almost 10 years now. The wife and I shot them again this year a couple weeks ago, and one of their Communications staff took this set of photos during the week-long shoot. An interesting perspective for me, as I almost never see what is going on around me as we conduct this shoot! Great people to work with, and their newly built campus is truly an amazing facility.

A fellow passenger was nice enough to take a shot of me at the office this morning... seriously fun hanging out of a helicopter and taking photos for clients. Too bad the weather did not cooperate - cloudy +/or rainy for all 4 hrs of flight time. Taken at the Steung Treng airport during a fuel stop. G11_IMG_3587

T2S7I9548 - While it is always good to get work, getting a call to shoot a 14 hr day in Preah Vihear Province on Christmas was a bit of a surprise. But getting a 40 minute tour of the province in an ultralight the next morning helped take the bite out of working Christmas day!!!

I was taking photos of finished pottery pieces for a pottery NGO - Khmer Artisans Project - in Kampong Chhnang last weekend, and using a flattened piece of wet clay to level the objects as I shot them. I discovered this unfortunate little guy stuck in the wet clay between shots, and just had to shoot him, too. Sometimes getting up at 5:00 AM for work doesn't suck, like when you wake up in a tiny little village called Koh Sneng north of Steung Treng and are looking forward to 150-200 kms on the Mekong River visiting other little villages along the way for your client.
