Like many people in their mid 30s, I’ve found myself thinking more and more about the romantic expectations I had for my life when I was younger, and how I’ve had to now start rethinking my choices and direction as those expectations increasingly no longer match my reality.

This piece is about being 35, single, and trying not to pause the present in the hope that a future you had always wanted may not arrive. If any of that resonates, you can read it by going to my substack in my bio.

Remembering one of my favourite ever trips - to beautiful South Kenya last year. If there was ever a brief window when my work felt like a dream I couldn’t have imagined for myself, it would’ve been those evenings spent shifting through these photos of the animals we spotted on safari during that week in Kenya. I might never be able to replicate a stretch of days that were so informative and so joyous, but at least photos can help preserve memories and make them feel more permanent. And man, I’m so grateful that I have these photos to remember some of the magic that Kenya offers.

My latest article for Metro on yesterday's antisemitic attack in Manchester.

'It has terrified me to see what were once fringe antisemitic positions become so widespread and normalised in recent years'

During my years working in newsrooms, I saw firsthand the shift a lot of journalists and progressive figures have been on to copy successful rage-bait and conspiracy theory influencers.

If things continue like this, democracy doesn't stand a chance:

If journalists follow the trend, democracy won’t stand a chance

It's strange looking at old videos and seeing how your style has developed over the years. Certainly with better equipment and drones the professionalism has improved but there's something more stylistic and personal about this that I rarely touch on nowadays. Essentially the real takeaway is that travel as a hobby or a profession is almost entirely dependent on the people we encounter and befriend, rather than the spectacular sights we get to see, and the more you try to make the trip look more impressive, that's something you can easily forget.

I had to fly my drone the highest I've ever flown it (around 380m) to even catch a full view of the Dolomites. I also woke up instinctively at 6am and decided to leave the hostel to enjoy this view all by myself. Funny ridiculous landscapes such as this feel like they almost count as people - you never really feel lonely in their presence.

Frankly there's no better image that I can think up about my mother than placing her calmly next to a beast with thumb-long fangs. Losing one parent means you're reluctantly aware how easy it can be to idolise a mother or a father, and forget the faults which made them a complex human. Those struggles, the failures and then the second tries, are as much part of the building blocks of the person as the kindness and the good days.

My mum is a tour-de-force. She's had to deal with obstacles to a conventional life that nobody would wish upon their enemies - and when she would come up short, she would somehow find another route. She's persevered, put up with me, and raised a family. And under that toughness is an extraordinary capacity to love - one that man and beast just cannot help but admire.
