NEW RELEASE
Lion in heavy rain, Tanzania 2022
We were out in the Serengeti during heavy rain and thunderstorms, driving off-road. Several times our vehicle got stuck in the mud, and the few tracks we could follow were slippery — more like sliding than driving.
A few times we had to stop and wait for the rain to ease, because it was so intense we could barely see. At one point, we even thought we might have to spend the night in the car and wait until morning.
Thanks to our very experienced driver and guide, we eventually made it safely back toward camp.
And then we found him.
A male lion лежing in the tall grass, completely unfazed by the rain. The water was pouring down on his head, his mane already heavy and flattened — and yet he remained calm and at ease, almost untouched by it all.
We were able to get as close as about 2 meters. I leaned out of the vehicle, the rain hitting me just as hard as it did him — and for a brief moment, it felt like we were both part of the same scene.
That’s how this portrait was created.
