Rest in Peace IL TALAL ❤️❤️

Today we have lost a Tsavo Icon. Mourning IL TALAL one of Africa’s last great Super “Tuskers”

It is with great sadness that today we report on the death of IL Talal, one of Tsavo’s most iconic and well-loved super tuskers. He was well known for his long symmetrical ivory that touched ground. He was a shy elephant and often in the company of 2 or 3 other bulls (his askari’s or body guards). He lived close to human settlements on the edge of the Tsavo West National Park.

We first caught wind that IL Tala had been suffering from a suspected spear wound in late Feb. Our partners MWCT informed us immediately and two treatments have been carried out since with the KWS veterinary unit (supported by DSWT). IL Talal seemed to be making a good recovery. He was monitored daily by MWCT scouts and all seemed ok, but sadly he died last night. The post-mortem diagnosis confirmed that IL Talal died from a twisted colon, which is believed to sometimes occur after heavy rains bringing on an abundance of succulent plants, which has been the case recently.

Tsavo Trust has been enthusiastically monitoring IL Talal for the last 8 years and MWCT has known him for the last 20 years.

There are positives to be taken from the death of IL Talal: he has lived a full life and died in his twilight years; he has also undoubtedly spread his tusker genes widely; he has brought together conservation partnerships (such as the Tusker monitoring carried out by MWCT & TT - Big Tusker project) and his ivory was recovered (and did not fall into the wrong hands) as a result of this consistent monitoring.

Black rhino Baraka lives in what used to be Morani’s 100-acre enclosure, carrying the flag for his predecessor. Baraka was born in the wild in Ol Pejeta, but lost sight in both eyes due to a fight and then a cataract. ⠀

Baraka now lives in the enclosure, located next to the Morani Information Centre, for his own safety, and has taken to his new role as rhino ambassador.⠀

Baraka can be fed from the specially designed feeding platform that borders his enclosure – offering visitors a unique experience and a chance to get up close and personal to an adult black rhino.⠀

It was a lovely experience feeding Baraka and seeing a rhino up close. I also appreciate how Ol Pejeta is taking care of Baraka and protecting the rest of the animals within the Conservancy.

It's been a tough year for all of us, and we know that most of you weren't able to travel to enjoy the beauty of nature and the feeling of being in the bush.
This year we opted to camp with our own tents and prepare food being the safest and most economical way of travelling.

As the year comes to an end, we would like to share some special memories we've experienced at various National Parks!

We hope that the New Year will be much more positive with a lot of great experiences and that you enjoy whatever it is that you couldn't in 2020. Happy New Year 2021 nature lovers!
