Meet Craig one of Kenya’s impressive males at 53.

Last week, our team spotted Craig, the celebrity super tusker of Amboseli, looking happy and healthy! At 53 years old, Craig has survived and thrived for longer than many other elephants get the chance to do. Old as he may be, Craig has a very important role to play in Amboseli. As a healthy active male, he is especially important for ensuring a strong gene pool is passed down to the next generation of elephants!

The biggest threat that elephants face in Africa today is habitat loss — this leads to fragmented landscapes which further denies these big mammals the freedom to roam. But thanks to the tireless efforts of communities like the Maasai in Kajiado County, we are safeguarding wildlife corridors to give wild animals ample . These efforts promote peaceful coexistence between people and wildlife, improving human livelihoods through tourism opportunities and enhancing community resilience in the face of climate change.

Amboseli Trust for Elephants doing a great job recording elephant groups and their movements. The best elephants data probably globally.

Eloi is a male from the EA family, was born in 2005 to Euphemia. We last saw him in July 2024, and now, nearly a year later, he’s been seen again in May!

Like many independent males, Eloi travels vast distances. ATE’s research has shown that mature males range widely across the ecosystem, contributing to genetic diversity by interacting with multiple female groups across large areas.

While Eloi is not yet in his reproductive prime years, we look forward to seeing him grow and ultimately find mating opportunities. These sightings help us understand male movement patterns and the crucial role males play in sustaining healthy elephant populations. Every re-sighting is a valuable data point in our long-term study.
