There’s something truly powerful about hearing a male lion roar. It’s not just a sound—it’s a way of communicating across the landscape.

• A lion’s roar can travel up to 8 kilometres across open terrain.

• Roaring helps lions communicate their location and maintain contact with their pride.

• Male lions often roar to advertise their presence and defend their territory.

• Lions can recognize the roars of individuals they know.

• Roaring is most common during the cooler hours, especially at night and around dawn.

• A deep, powerful roar can help discourage rival males from approaching.

Out here, the roar of a lion is one of the sounds that defines the wild and we were lucky to catch it live on safari.

Remembering Baraka 🦏

We are deeply saddened by the passing of Baraka, who died on Sunday at Ol Pejeta Conservancy at the age of 31 years.

Baraka lived a remarkable life and became a familiar and much-loved figure to visitors from Kenya and around the world. Despite being blind, he continued to inspire curiosity, compassion and a deeper appreciation for the challenges faced by endangered wildlife.

We are especially grateful to all our guests who had the opportunity to meet Baraka during their travels with Jemu Expeditions. The memories and stories shared from those encounters will remain part of his legacy.

We would also like to recognise our founder, James Mwenda, for the important role he has played throughout his conservation journey, particularly in caring for and advocating for rhinos and helping create greater awareness about the importance of protecting endangered wildlife.

As we mourn Baraka, we also celebrate his life and the many people he touched.

Rest in peace, Baraka. Your story will continue to inspire conservation. 🦏🌍

One of the things I enjoy most about hosting safaris is sharing not just the wildlife, but the culture that makes Kenya so special.

On my recent trip , my guests told me they wanted to skip the usual fine restaurant dining and experience a local restaurant instead. Naturally, I was more than happy to take them. Sometimes the most memorable moments of a journey aren't just found out in the bush—they're around a table, enjoying authentic local food, conversations, laughter and experiencing a destination the way locals do.

Safari is about more than seeing animals. It's about connecting with people, places and cultures.

Fourteen unforgettable days across Kenya and Tanzania have come to an end for Dennis and Carol Powers.

One of the things we enjoy most at Jemu Expeditions is not just the safari itself, but the entire journey that begins long before our guests arrive in Africa. From the very first conversation where a dream safari is imagined, to the countless discussions, ideas, refinements and adjustments, we work hand in hand with our guests to design an experience that truly reflects their interests and expectations.

Every safari is different because every traveler is different. We love the back-and-forth planning process, carefully curating each detail to ensure the final itinerary feels personal, seamless, and memorable.

For Dennis and Carol Powers ,it was a privilege to bring that vision to life on a privately guided adventure through some of East Africa’s most iconic landscapes and wildlife destinations. Even more rewarding was seeing the excitement, wonder and appreciation that comes with experiencing Africa’s wild places firsthand.

This journey was privately guided by our founder and lead guide James Mwenda and we couldn’t have asked for a better way to conclude another incredible safari.

The first chapter of our guests’ East African adventure is complete! 🇰🇪✨

After an incredible journey through Kenya, our guests have now flown directly to Serengeti for the next five days of their safari. We’ll reunite again in Amboseli for the final leg of this unforgettable adventure.

It has been a privilege watching them experience their very first African safari—seeing the excitement, wonder, and appreciation for the wildlife, landscapes, and cultures that make this continent so special.

There’s something deeply calming about the quietness and serenity of Ithumba Reintegration Unit. Watching the elephants gather for their evening slurp against the vast wilderness views is a reminder that travel doesn’t always have to be rushed.

And just when you think it couldn’t get better — you arrive at the highlight.

A plunge into the crystal-clear, icy waters flowing straight from Mount Kenya, at the natural swimming pools tucked deep within the forest. Refreshing, raw, and incredibly rejuvenating.

Ngare Ndare is more than just a forest — it’s a vital wildlife corridor linking Lewa and Mount Kenya, often frequented by elephants, and home to diverse birdlife and rare plant species.
