I was commissioned by The Contient.org to do this photo series.

Lamu’s streets are too narrow for cars. Navigating them is possible only on foot – or by donkey. The
island is home to about 3,000 donkeys, which people rely on for commuting and transporting building material, refuse, trade goods and everyday supplies. So integral are donkeys to Lamu life that they are given as presents at weddings and other important ceremonies.

"Zanzibari" or" Shangazi Kaja" bags on sale. Some people in Kenya refer to it as a "Nigerian" bag. These bags are famous for their use in travel, market shopping, and moving household items due to their large size, strength, and low cost.

Inside Kibera informal settlement, on New Year's Day. 1st January, 2026.
It's either more food than usual or special meals; or both with family and friends and an afternoon walk/visits with lots of photoshoots on the streets, especially for children. A lot of face painting , balloons, brand new clothes specific for this day and some pocket money for children. I felt nostalgic capturing these brief moments that depict celebration, love , joy and care for family from a local scene but resonating globally.

Despite its low price point within the Kenyan economy, "mitumba" ( second hand clothing) constitutes about 10% of the labour force in Kenya. It is dominating the clothing industry market in Kenya, offering affordable options especially for low-income earners. These second hand clothes come from countries like the USA, Europe and China.
