I was commissioned by The Contient.org to do this photo series.
Lamu’s streets are too narrow for cars. Navigating them is possible only on foot – or by donkey. The
island is home to about 3,000 donkeys, which people rely on for commuting and transporting building material, refuse, trade goods and everyday supplies. So integral are donkeys to Lamu life that they are given as presents at weddings and other important ceremonies.
