Philip J. Briggs Photography Conservationist and Photographer. Passionate about human-wildlife coexistence and finding solutions

Having been born in Maasailand, I’ve lived a life that my Northern Irish roots wouldn’t comprehend. The Maasai have taught me more about lions than any book or scientific paper. Conserving lions in an area that I grew up as a child is a privilege.

Happy 100th Birthday to Sir David Attenborough!

We are incredibly grateful for Sir David’s lifelong commitment to conservation and protecting our planet. It was such an honor to welcome him in 2012 to learn about the Lion Guardians organisation and our work alongside communities to protect lions and coexist with wildlife.

Congratulations on this extraordinary milestone, and thank you for inspiring generations of people around the world and helping make so much positive change possible. Your voice, passion, and dedication continue to give hope to all of us working for the future of our natural world.

“Tiptoeing on Nature’s Canvas”

I’m excited to share that this photograph has been selected as one of 20 winners in the Remembering Wildlife Remembering Giraffes competition. Even more special is that it’s the only aerial image selected among the finalists.

The photograph will be featured in an upcoming coffee table book alongside some of the world’s finest giraffe imagery, scheduled for publication in October 2026.

If you’d like to support giraffe conservation efforts, now’s the time to get involved. The Kickstarter campaign closes soon, this Sunday at 8pm BST.

Two of my other images also made the top 200, swipe to the end to take a look.

The ultimate gentle giant, Craig. He was visually iconic, but it was his character that left the deepest impression on me and on so many who were lucky enough to spend time close to him over the years. Rest in peace, old friend.

Back in 2019, one giraffe captured our disbelief with his dramatically crooked neck. Whether the result of scoliosis or a youthful injury, his condition seemed so severe that we doubted he would survive in this harsh environment.

Fast forward six years, and against all odds, he has appeared again, healthier and stronger than ever. His coat has deepened into the rich, dark hue often seen in older male giraffes. Far from being hindered by his irregular neck, he has sired multiple offspring, living proof that he is thriving in this landscape. He not only survived the gruelling drought of 2022, when thousands of animals across Amboseli perished, but has also evaded major threats while living in a lion-rich stronghold.

He has aptly been named “Wonkiito,” after another legendary survivor from the same Amboseli ecosystem in Kenya: Loonkiito, the oldest wild lion ever recorded. Like his namesake, Wonkiito has defied every expectation.

His survival is a testament to Amboseli’s conservation success, built on coexistence between wildlife and the Maasai people. Across much of Africa, giraffe numbers are declining, but here they remain stable thanks to strong protection and community collaboration. Big Life Foundation plays a vital role on community land, safeguarding wildlife like this giraffe across the ecosystem.

Back in 2019, I wrote: “You can bend me, but you cannot break me!” Today, that statement feels truer than ever. He truly still is the “Kink of the Jungle.”

It’s always nice to see your images published in a magazine…but this one is a little special for me since it’s of one of my best friends and in one of my favourite magazines.

An amazing accomplishment for Leela Hazzah who fully deserves to be included in such an amazing list of conservation heroes or “Wonder Women” as described in the BBC Wildlife Magazine article.
