A Storybook Bakery in the Yatsugatake Highlands｜八ヶ岳高原の苔むすカントリーキッチンベーカリー

Tucked in the forest of Fujimi-Kogen in Nagano Prefecture, this storybook-like bakery is known for stone-oven bread and baked goods featuring seasonal ingredients from Nagano and Yamanashi Prefectures.

What captured my attention, however, was the building itself: its stone facade, weathered green shutters, climbing vines, and thick layer of moss covering the roof. With Dale-chan resting beside the entrance, I found myself wondering whether the moss is simply part of the bakery’s rustic charm or an ongoing maintenance challenge.

Kousa Dogwood in Hokuto, Yamanashi・ヤマボウシ｜山梨県北杜市

While traveling to Nagano Prefecture, I stopped at Ciao Café in rural Hokuto, Yamanashi. Its simple outdoor seating was especially welcoming as I was traveling with my border collie, Dale-chan, where we could rest beneath a large kousa dogwood covered in pale pink and creamy-white bracts.

My latest post shares a few photographs from the visit and a closer look at the tree known in Japan as yamabōshi (ヤマボウシ).

Sacred Cedars and the Worship Hall of Osugi Shrine・御神木と大杉神社の拝殿

Osugi Shrine traces its history to ancient worship centered on a massive cedar tree that once stood on the shrine grounds. The name Osugi (大杉) literally means “great cedar,” reflecting the importance of this sacred tree to the shrine and the surrounding community.

Long before the present shrine buildings existed, the enormous cedar stood near the shores of what was once a vast inland sea. Its size made it a useful landmark for sailors and traders navigating the waterways of the region.

Kirin-mon: The Grand Gate of Osugi Shrine・麒麟門｜大杉神社の楼門

Osugi Shrine traces its origins dating back to 767 CE. As for the shrine’s gate, I couldn’t determine when it was originally built. However, I was able to find sources stating that an earlier version was built around 1730, only to burn down in 1747.

The current gate was reconstructed over a two-year period at a cost of about 380 million yen (roughly $2.5 million USD) and opened to the public in April 2010 to commemorate the 1,240th anniversary of the shrine’s founding.
