Sakura in Tokyo have mostly come to an end, except for the late-blooming double-petaled varieties.
But don’t worry—up north, season is just beginning!

One of Japan’s top three sakura spots, Hirosaki Park in Aomori, will be hosting its famous Hirosaki Sakura Festival starting April 16, with peak bloom expected next week.

If you’re traveling in Japan now, it’s the perfect time to head north and enjoy a new wave of SAKURA!!

日本三大桜の名所の一つ、青森県・弘前公園では「弘前さくらまつり」が4月16日から始まり、来週には見ごろを迎えます。

A peaceful moment under the SAKURA🌸

I took a peaceful boat ride down the Suimon River in Gifu, surrounded by SAKURA in full bloom.

This serene river flows through the historical town of Ōgaki, a place deeply connected to the famous haiku poet Matsuo Bashō.
In fact, this is where he ended his journey in The Narrow Road to the Deep North (Oku no Hosomichi). It’s said that he admired this river and its beauty over 300 years ago.

Unlike the busy sakura spots in Tokyo or Kyoto, here you can enjoy the blossoms at a slower pace—floating under the petals, hearing only the gentle splash of water and soft chatter in the breeze. It’s like stepping into a haiku yourself.

If you’re planning a spring trip to Japan and want to experience cherry blossoms away from the crowds, I highly recommend visiting Gifu.
The riverboat ride usually runs during sakura season and is guided by friendly locals in traditional happi coats.

A truly unforgettable way to experience Japan’s fleeting spring magic.

岐阜・大垣の水門川で、桜満開の中舟くだりを体験しました🌸

満開の桜に包まれながら、ゆっくりと進む舟の上。
ここ大垣は、俳聖・松尾芭蕉が『奥の細道』の旅を終えた場所としても知られています。
彼もこの川の美しさに心を打たれたのかもしれません。

東京や京都の有名な桜スポットと違って、ここでは静かに、ゆったりと桜を楽しむことができます。
川面を流れる花びら、水の音、春の風。まるで一篇の俳句の中にいるような、そんな時間でした😌

春に日本を訪れる予定の方、人混みを避けて桜を満喫したい方には本当におすすめの場所です。

日本の春の儚さと美しさを、全身で感じられる特別な体験でした。

今年は（今年も）桜が入学式まで持ってくれましたね。

こちらの写真は去年アメリカで撮った写真です。

アメリカ駐在からの本帰国は長女が1年生の5月のときだったので日本の小学校の入学式参加は叶いませんでした。

でもやっぱり桜とランドセルの姿を入学式シーズンに写真に残しておきたいな、と思ったのでお友達にお借りして写真だけ撮りました。

（ランドセルも服も靴も靴下も全て貸してくれてました🥹）

「わたしも入学式に出たかったな」と思い出したかのようにたまにぽつりと言うのでせめてこの写真は撮っておいて良かったなって思うのでした😌

A lovely day exploring Asakusa with a sweet family visiting from Sweden!

It was quite chilly, but coming from a cold country, they seemed just fine—maybe even enjoying the crisp air more than I was!

Since returning to Japan last summer after four years abroad, I’ve been amazed by how lively the tourist scene has become. In popular spots like Asakusa, the crowds are so international that it almost feels like I’ve stepped out of Japan. But that’s also part of today’s Japan—busy, vibrant, and full of life.

Asakusa is a must-visit! You’ll find all kinds of traditional Japanese souvenirs here, and the iconic giant lantern at Senso-ji Temple makes the perfect photo spot. Wander down Nakamise Street, grab some street food (yes, we love eating on the go in Japan!), and don’t forget to greet the gods at the temple.

At the front of the main hall, you’ll see a large incense burner—bathing in its smoke is said to purify the body and even heal aches and pains. It’s a beautiful tradition, so take a moment to enjoy it.

Oh, and the Shiba Inu boom is real! Already a beloved breed, they’re now everywhere—after our walk through Asakusa, I somehow ended up with seven Shiba souvenirs. If it rains, why not stop by a Shiba Inu cafe for a cozy break?

Traveling with kids? Hanayashiki, Japan’s oldest amusement park, is just around the corner. And during sakura season, Ueno Park is another great stop nearby.

Have you been enjoying the cherry blossoms this year?🌸

After a week of cloudy skies and chilly winds, Tokyo finally gave us a clear day to enjoy the sakura without freezing!😮‍💨

Interestingly, the early-blooming sakura had more warm and sunny days than the current Somei Yoshino season. This photo was taken on one of those rare, warm spring days.

The pink blossoms you see here are Oh-kanzakura, which bloom after Kawazu-zakura and just before Somei Yoshino, Japan’s most iconic cherry blossom variety.

For travelers visiting Japan for the cherry blossoms, it can be quite a gamble—will the sakura be blooming during your stay? Will the weather cooperate? Spring in Japan is full of surprises!😵😵😵

Even for us locals, predicting peak bloom is a challenge. We check the forecast daily and plan around nature’s timing!

But don’t worry—besides Somei Yoshino, Japan has many early and late-blooming varieties. If you’re visiting between mid-February and mid-April, there’s a good chance you’ll catch some beautiful sakura along the way🌸🌸🌸

🌸 Sakura Season Has Officially Begun! 🌸

A school route lined with fully bloomed cherry blossoms.

The long-awaited Somei Yoshino cherry blossoms are finally in bloom!

Since February, I’ve been chasing early-blooming sakura, but the true star of the season is definitely the Somei Yoshino🥺

Now, all of Japan is wrapped in a soft, delicate shade of pink🌸🌸🌸

🌸 A Peaceful Moment by the Sakura Riverbank 🌸

On March 20, 2025, I visited a beautiful cherry blossom-lined path in Ichikawa.

This bench looked as if it was placed there just for these two💕
It was such a picturesque scene that I couldn’t help but take a photo🥺

Watching them chat peacefully while admiring the Tokyo Skytree beyond the Edogawa River and the people strolling by made my heart feel so warm.

That day, the Kawazu-zakura were in full bloom, but the rows of Somei Yoshino trees stood nearby, waiting for their time to shine…✨

People were taking leisurely walks, cycling along the riverbank, and enjoying hanami under the blossoms. It felt like such a peaceful place, loved by the locals—a truly heartwarming sight.

その前に先日訪れた市川の桜並木の写真を…🌸

まるでこのお二人のために用意されたかのようなベンチ。
とても絵になる光景だったので、思わず写真を撮らせていただきました🥺💕

柔らかい雰囲気のお二人が、江戸川越しのスカイツリーや散歩を楽しむ人々を眺めながらお喋りする姿が、なんとも微笑ましく、心が温かくなりました💓

この日は河津桜が満開でしたが、ソメイヨシノの並木もあり、これから見頃を迎えることでしょう。
土手では散歩を楽しむ人、自転車で颯爽と駆け抜ける人、桜を眺めながらお花見や写真撮影をする人々…

地元の人々に愛される、この穏やかで平和な場所の空気を感じながら、なんとも心が和むひとときでした。

The Best is Yet to Come—Cherry Blossom Season in Japan! 🌸

The early-blooming SAKURA season is coming to an end in Tokyo.
If you’re visiting Japan this spring, you might be surprised to see cherry blossoms already blooming!

Japan’s most iconic cherry blossom is the Somei Yoshino variety, making up about 80% of the cherry trees in the country.
Any variety that blooms before it is called early-blooming sakura (hayazaki no sakura).

While early-blooming sakura can be enjoyed for a longer period, Somei Yoshino is fleeting—lasting about 10 days in perfect weather, but sometimes disappearing within a week if it rains.

You’ll be amazed by the sight of cherry trees bursting into bloom all at once.
Seriously, they are everywhere! Even as a local, I’m shocked every year by how many cherry trees exist around me😳😳😳

Get ready—Japan’s TRUE sakura season is just around the corner! And remember, it will be over in the blink of an eye, so don’t miss it! 🌸✨

☂️ 雨の桜神宮レポ ❄️

桜神宮の両脇に佇むのは、美しい河津桜。🌸
夜になるとライトアップされ、さらに雨に濡れた桜が光を反射して幻想的な景色に。これは雨の日ならではの楽しみ方のようです。

Instagramで「雨の桜神宮」の美しさを知り、次に雨が降ったら行こう！と決めていました。
そして訪れた日、まさかの雪❄️
雪を撮るのは初めてでしたが、偶然にも美しい光景を捉えることができました。

朝9:10に到着すると、すでにたくさんのフォトグラファーが静かに撮影中。
みなさん、ある一定のラインを越えずに整列して撮っていたので、とりあえず私も真似して並んでみることに。
初めての夜撮影＆この空気感に、ちょっとドキドキ…！(笑)

30分もすると、撮影目的ではない人も増え、境界線がなくなり、みんな桜の木に近寄って自由に撮影＆お花見モードに🌸

1枚目の鉄板画角、最初に撮っておけてよかった〜とホッとする一方、慣れない夜撮影＆ベテランっぽいフォトグラファーさんたちに圧倒され、早々に切り上げてしまったのが心残り…。（ちなみに2枚目の方が好み、こっちをトップに持ってこようかめっちゃ迷った！）

Instagramで後から皆さんの作品を見て「ああ、もっとこうすればよかった！」と、反省点ばかりが浮かぶ撮影でした。

ところで…カメラ友達ってどうやって作るんだろう？
ワイワイ楽しそうに撮影している人たちを見て、ちょっと羨ましくなりました。

孤高のソロ活動をしている私ですが、今年は”写活友達”を作るのが目標のひとつ📷✨
せっかくご縁を結ぶ神様のいる桜神宮なので、次回訪れたらお願いしてみようと思います(笑)

🌸Pink Carpet of Okame Sakura at Jufukuji Temple🌸

Jufukuji Temple is now covered in a stunning pink carpet of Okame Sakura petals! The cherry blossom tunnel is breathtaking, and the traditional houses lining the path add to the charm. 🏡✨

As I walked through, I saw hiyodori birds sipping nectar from the flowers, causing a gentle shower of petals—nature’s own artistic touch. 🕊🌸

When I first discovered this place on Instagram, I knew I had to visit after the rain, when the petals would create the most magical scene. The deep pink hue of Okame Sakura also looks best under cloudy skies. But on this day, the unexpected sunshine gave it a different beauty. ☀️💖 Still, I’d love to return on a misty, rainy day to see the blossoms glistening with raindrops.
