Abandoned. But beautiful! in Japan.

Abandoned areas like these are not uncommon here. They're the wreckage of failed tourist spots that couldn't sustain business outside of kouyou season. But every year in the fall they come alive again with visitors who come to see the fall leaves, and you get a glimpse of the former life of a little town. So wabi sabi.

I lived in this city 10 years ago. I would come to places like Namba to shop and hang out with my friends. But I will never forget the confusion of getting off the train at Namba station and having no idea where I am. The sudden disorientation of a mental map that I took such pride in disintegrating from my memory in an instant. I stepped off the train and realized I was in a very different city than the one I knew before.

Strange how cities grow up too.

Consider a story from the February 1998 edition of Reader's Digest, which tells about a couple who "took early retirement from their jobs in the Northeast five years ago when he was 59 and she was 51. Now they live in Punta Gorda, Florida, where they cruise on their 30 foot trawler, play softball and collect shells." At first, when I read it I thought it might be a joke. A spoof on the American Dream. But it wasn't.
