Street portraits with the Rolleiflex. Literally some this guy into existence as I was walking. Finished the portrait of the guy in my last post then started walking again. I said out loud that I wanted one more portrait of someone Japanese with tattoos. Sure enough a block later I see this guy walking towards me. Slick got a little nervous only because I had said what I said and then he was there. But I shook the nerves and saw the opportunity to ask. He agreed and I made his portrait. The photo came out really nice and he was a cool guy.

Street portraits with the Rolleiflex are always exciting, a little nerve wrecking, and there is always that moment of mystery of what will happen. I spoke about it in a video on my channel, but I think it's all about how my mood is for the day. If my energy is good I am very confident approaching people. This is for sure not every day. Some days I don't want to approach anyone.

This portrait and the subsequent self portrait with my friends all happened within one block. Sometimes photos just fall in your lap. Especially with street portraits learn to listen to your nervousness and go toward the people who you think are interesting. If you get the approval or not, you still conquered your small bit of nervousness or doubt. That's a win.

Late post from my roll on Halloween eve. I was coming back from Okayama on the train. As I was headed back home I remembered it was the night before Halloween and there might be something happening in Dotonbori. Wasn't sure cause it was Sunday but I jumped off the train to check it out. Sure enough the whole Shinsaibashi/ Dotonbori area was buzzing with people. It was already about midnight by the time I got there but there was still people everywhere. Only had one roll of HP5 that I pushed to 3200 and shot it all within about 30 minutes. Here are a few shots I liked.

For the 31st, my favorite set of spooky self portraits 👻.

When I made these self portraits it was actually the first time I had tried to make any portraits of myself that weren't through a mirror. I took these during quarantine right at the beginning of the pandemic in 2020 and made a video on how to make self portraits and put it on my YouTube channel. It's kinda old now but I think there is some good info still on there. Be safe everyone.

Summer portraits. Walking around Osaka castle and saw this guy walking in front of me. I caught up with him and asked him to take his portrait. After he turned around and ask "Who? Me?" Then he agreed. I tried to pose him in an over the shoulder power stance because that's how he was standing in general. He also reminded me of an early 90s anime character or a 90s bosozoku so that played into the pose too lol. Wasn't exactly how I wanted him but it worked out ok!

In my last post I talked about being on your feet more to catch more moments in the streets. That has definitely been working, but I also mentioned it's better than riding my bike. Now I have a small caveat to that statement. This is where the GR comes in for me.

Because the GR is small, light, quick to focus because of snap, and I can shoot with one had it has become my bike camera. I can shoot this camera and control my bike at the same time and I've gotten results I really like.

I enjoy movement in my photos. Sometimes to the point that things are a complete blur. For me this is what my eyes actually see. I'm either walking by moments or only catch a glance at something before I continue on. It's cool to capture sharp moments, but especially at night, this is what I see through my eyes.

A couple weeks I was looking at some photos from another street photographers and was in aw by the moment they had captured. I thought how do they catch ask these moments? Then it hit me, it's because they are always in the action. They are always on their feet. Not in a car, not on a bike, feet on the streets. The next day I decided to walk instead of taking my bike and I've been walking more and more since then, and a lot more in my neighborhood. I've made a lot more photos and just in general have had some great interactions and met some dope people. Just be on your feet. The photos will come.

Japanese places. Architecture is one of those things you never understand how it plays into how you receive a place visually until you change your environment. There are so many subtleties that make the Japanese landscape so visually different than back home in the US. The lines of building are different, the colors, the materials, the random vending machines that are randomly scattered around everywhere. All of those things and more play with your eyes and create a visual footprint that at least for me in etched into my mind.

Still going through my first roll with the P67. Even tried to zonefocus the 105 and it worked out. After renting the P67+105 I eventually bought a P67+ 90mmLS which I then sold to fund my Rollei just to turn right around and find a cheap one and buy it again with the 135mm. I honestly think if all the MF formats I've tried so far, 67 is still my favorite. 66 is cool and I like it, but I like having vertical or horizontal frames. In a MF shootout which crop you picking? (Also thanks for pushing the ZoneFocused family over 4K! ✊🏽)

Pentax 67. Shots from my first roll with the 105mm. I used to love shooting this scene in Okayama. It's where ask of the taxis pool up to wait for customers in front of Okayama station. In the Fall and winter the afternoon light in this area was super nice.
