MIKI SAKAI - PRINCIPAL PHOTOGRAPHER

As far as I can remember, I have always loved being creative! I loved to draw as a kid, I became an Architect before becoming a Photographer, I love dancing, and above all, I love the creative process of photography. For me, it's always been the human connection and intimate stories that fascinates me that I have been so eager to capture. The way I view the wor

ld through my lens has been influenced by where I have been in my life so far. I am Japanese born, but have lived in London, New York, Tokyo, Buenos Aires, and now in Sydney. I love coming from a mixed cultural background and I am certain that is why I love meeting, talking, and connecting with people and learning from them about their different experiences and perspectives in life. MY STORY-TELLING PHOTOGRAPHY

I believe in the importance of photographs becoming keepsakes or heirlooms in years and perhaps even generations to come. It's so powerful to think that what is being recorded at present could be passed on and loved and treasured by so many in the future. I know this first hand because my grandfather, an amateur photographer who passed away decades ago, documented a beautiful series of photographs of me as a newborn. When I look at these photos today, I can feel the joy, excitement, nervousness, warmth and all the mixed emotions of my parents and family members. The careful attention and dedication that was given to capture the small details and expressions through a series of every day moments. I aspire to be a great story-teller through my photography. Whether it is with a single or a series of photographs, I hope to capture and narrate your authentic and original story.

It may not seem like it yet but Autumn in Tokyo is on its way🍂🍁

Golden leaves, crisp air and one of my favourite seasons for family photographs.

November is also Shichi-Go-San (七五三) season — a beautiful Japanese tradition celebrating children at ages 3, 5 and 7.

I had the privilege to photograph this gorgeous family for the second time, and I was delighted to welcome them back for the little boy’s Shichi-Go-San celebration — this time with the grandparents joining too. What a special day 🤍

If you are visiting Tokyo this autumn or celebrating a special family milestone, I would love to capture it for you in a session that focuses on the essence of your family — the personalities, the quirks, the laughter, and the love 🕊️ Autumn dates are limited and filling quickly.

Want to stroll around Tokyo in a beautiful kimono and capture some unforgettable memories as you explore the city with your loved ones? I’ve got you! 🤍

Let’s slow down and experience Tokyo this way — admiring the intricate details of a traditional temple, stopping for an ice cream on a hot day, trying local sweets from a little food stall, or getting distracted by all the unique and quirky souvenirs you might want to take home. These little moments are often my favourite ones to photograph because they are the memories that make a trip feel like your trip.

Bottom line — I want your photos to feel like you — relaxed, curious, inspired and joyful — rather than overly posed or staged.

Whether it’s a couple’s stroll, a family adventure, or simply a special day for yourself, I would love to wander Tokyo with you and capture a little piece of your Japan story.

A little note: I don’t provide kimono rental services, but there are lots of wonderful kimono rental options around Tokyo that you can easily book online (in English!) before your trip ✨

If you ask me… motherhood doesn’t begin the day your baby is born🕊️

It really begins the moment you realise you are growing a tiny, pea-sized person inside you. Those nine months of carrying, protecting and nurturing — quietly putting this little life before your own — were already motherhood.

Hindsight is, of course, 20/20, and I only wish I had documented more of mine. We take thousands of photos of our babies, but so few of ourselves with the little miracle growing inside us. And those moments are a part of their story, and OUR story as we begin this journey into motherhood too — a time you won’t get back.

So if you are in that season now, take the photos.
All the moments. By yourself, with your partner, with your family — all of them 🤍

Let’s be honest — Tokyo summers can get VERY hot!

Many of my clients visiting from overseas tell me they underestimated just how hot and humid Tokyo would be.

But with a little preparation, summer sessions can be so much fun!✨

I have put together 7 practical tips to help you beat the heat and make the most of your Tokyo summer photo session.

Swipe through, and don’t forget to read the caption under each slide for more details🌿

〰️ Where to buy a kids’ jinbei or yukata:

Department stores such as:

• Keio, Odakyu & Tokyu – A mix of everyday and premium children’s brands.

• Takashimaya, Isetan & Mitsukoshi – Premium and designer children’s brands.

Baby/Children’s clothing stores (they sell many baby and children’s products other than just clothing):

• Akachan Honpo
• Nishimatsuya

Other places:

• Airport souvenir shops
• Shopping malls
• Many local shops across Japan during summer

🤍 Try to bring as little as possible to your session. Fewer bags make it much easier to move between locations and help keep the session relaxed and stress-free.

If you can leave your stroller at the hotel, even better! If not, no problem at all — just aim to bring one bag that’s easy to set down while we are taking your photos.

〰️ Staying hydrated is essential in the summer heat!

It’s also a fun opportunity for your little ones to interact with one of Tokyo’s iconic vending machines while I capture some natural, candid moments.

〰️ Where to buy cooling essentials in Tokyo:

🤍 Cooling body wipes & neck wraps

Pharmacies such as:
• Matsumoto Kiyoshi (Matsukiyo)
• Welcia
• Sundrug

or

Convenience stores such as:
• FamilyMart
• 7-Eleven
• Lawson

🤍 Portable fans
• Loft
• MUJI
• Don Quijote (Donki)
• Electronics stores - Yodobashi Camera, Bic Camera, Yamada Denki LABI

✨ Most stores also stock other summer cooling essentials, so keep an eye out while exploring Tokyo!

〰️ You can find UV Umbrellas & Wide-Brimmed Hats almost everywhere in Tokyo — from convenience stores, pharmacies, and shops in train stations to department stores, 100-yen shops, and 3COINS (though these items will cost more than ¥100/¥300).

You don’t need to use them in your photos, but if you find one you

When people think of visiting Tokyo, everyone pictures something a little different. Some imagine the excitement of iconic sights and busy streets, while others are drawn to a quieter kind of experience — settling into one corner of the city ❤️

This lovely family of three chose to spend their session doing exactly that — wandering through Tokyo’s old book district! We just followed whatever caught their attention and enjoyed exploring this wonderful neighborhood.

I loved capturing the feeling of that time together — not just what they saw, but the little conversations, the giggles, the curiosity, and memories that grew from the experience✨

Some thoughts on motherhood that have been sitting in my heart today.

What a journey. What a beautiful, untamed ride.
You try to imagine what it will be like,
but nothing could ever prepare you for the way it transforms every inch of you.

It arrives quietly and all at once,
carrying more love, more wonder,
and more depth than you ever thought possible.

Becoming a mother has humbled me in ways words can hardly hold. It changes the way you see the world.

It teaches you patience on the hardest days,
and love beyond measure in the smallest moments.

It shows you how deeply selfless you can become for another human being.

It teaches you fear, vulnerability, strength, and gratitude — all woven together, all messy and tangled, yet somehow forming something so imperfectly perfect.

To every mother caring endlessly for her child or children.

To every woman nurturing and mothering someone in her own way.

To every mum-to-be, holding dreams close to her heart.

To those longing to become a mother.

And especially to those whose hearts ache unimaginably deeply to hold their own child or mother once more.

Sending love to you all from the deepest part of my heart today. I see you.

And somehow, through all the beauty and chaos and tenderness, we are walking this journey of motherhood together.

Happy Mother’s Day 🤍

There is something especially beautiful about Tokyo from spring to early summer 🌿

The city slowly fills with soft fresh greenery, delicate seasonal flowers, warm light, and comfortable evenings before the intense summer heat arrives. It is one of my favourite times for outdoor sessions — relaxed walks together, children playing freely, quiet moments between couples, and natural family memories surrounded by some of the most beautiful scenery of the year.

Perfect for family, maternity, couple, newborn lifestyle, and portrait sessions ✨

If you have been thinking about booking a session, this is such a lovely season to do it. I would love to photograph your story during this beautiful time in Tokyo!

There is something so special about capturing people in the season of life they are in 🌸

For this beautiful couple, spring — with its new blooms and warm and gentle beauty — felt like the perfect reflection of this chapter as they await the arrival of their baby 🕊️

“These are beautiful Miki! Better than even what I imagined.”

Messages I receive like this, after sending them sneak peeks make me so happy, but more than anything, they make me pause and feel grateful.

Choosing to book a photo session already means something. And when a family does that while visiting Tokyo, on their trip of a lifetime, it carries even more weight.

I find myself thinking about what this moment means to them. How it feels to be their family, how they want to freeze this moment of their kids, exactly as they are right now.

The scenery, the light, the sweet in-between moments… I want it all to feel honest, warm, and true.

So that years from now, they can look back and feel, “yes, that was us.”
