Nights in Tokyo

From the streets of Shimbashi with drunken salarymen to the narrow alleyways of Shinjuku, Tokyo transforms into a completely different city as the night falls.

The city's pulse changes as neon signs begin to buzz and the locals begin finding a spot for dinner. Add a bit of rain, and the glistening asphalt suddenly makes for the most interesting photographs.

Nights in Tokyo will always be my first love when it comes to street photography. Working on this set allowed me to tap back to my roots of being inspired by anime like AKIRA and the works of my early influences like Masashi Wakui and Liam Wong.

It might've taken quite a while as I was afraid to call "wrap" on this Nights in Tokyo set. However, I realised while working on these photos that photographing Tokyo at night will never truly end.

I hope you enjoy the photos as much as I enjoyed working on them!

Singapore has been my home for close to 8 years now.

A big chunk of my career, plus the bigger milestones of my life, all happened here. This is where I've made the step of pursuing photography full time, this is where my wife and I got married, this is where we've built so many relationships that we hope will last a lifetime.

It's been a long time since I last did a Singapore photoset, and as we celebrate Singapore's 60th birthday, I thought it's befitting to do one up, just to show what's going on this side of the world if you haven't visited recently.

Technology and luxury are still big, while traditions are still upheld across cultures. Everyone is still passionate about where to find the best chicken rice, and everyone is still patient to queue for their favourite hawker food.

In my stay here, so many things have change, yet so many things have remained the same. Thank you for allowing me to call you home, Singapore. Happy 60th!

Slowing Down in Siargao

This side of the Philippines has been making waves in recent times, and for good reasons. Besides being the country's surf capital since it started becoming popular to surfers in the late 90s, the recent boom in tourism has also made it a haven for non-surfers like me.

Shying itself from developments like a branch of Starbucks or Jollibee, especially compared to the more popular Boracay Island, this place has preserved and maintained its own unique laid-back vibe that I haven't found elsewhere in the country.

In exchange, Siargao is now home to many home-grown and amazing f&b concepts. To name a few: CEV has made me like ceviche and kinilaw, Las Barriccas is where I found some legit Spanish fare recently, Lechon Baboy got me dreaming of their lechon (and made me sad that it wasn't ideal to return to this place only because there was limited meal times, and so many good places to try around) and Last Chance bar has got some of the more interesting cocktails inspired by local Filipino flavours and produce.

The beaches in Siargao may not be as beautiful as the islands of Palawan, but the atmosphere here is what people are coming back for. And while it's hard for me to articulate this ~vibe, I bet it has a lot to do with the locals and residents who now call Siargao home— their hospitality and friendliness is contagious.

After this first visit, I understand why people never want to leave this island or are already planning when they can return again. Brb as I book my flight to visit the 2nd time around this year. 🌝

Last Winter, I got to spend 2 weeks in Tokyo without an itinerary.

This allowed me to go back to my old "shooting mode" where it's just unadulterated exploring of Tokyo, including parts that I never got to visit before.

It was definitely interesting to be shooting around almost all night long, and seeing other parts of Tokyo empty. Think Harajuku or Shinjuku but without the mob of tourists. It definitely allowed me to see the city in a new light.

Really glad I got to do this, and quite happy with how the photos turned out. Some of these remind me of the first Tokyo photoset that I posted, and just happy I get to take more photos of this amazing city.

This was definitely a more laid back trip, and my only work assignment was to create a video of my experience using the SEL2870GM.

Literally was able to bring this lens with me everywhere I go, as it was definitely lighter than it looks. The f/2.0 opening really came in clutch for most of these night shots, as I was able to lower my shutter speed and avoid motion blur.

All photos shot with the Sony ⍺7R V and SEL2870GM. Settings per photos are in the photo captions.

Sakura in Tokyo

This time of the year, Tokyo takes on a different look and energy as parts of the city gets blanketed in mesmerising sakura blooms.

Witnessing the sakura trees bloom and begin to fall has taught me to appreciate the beauty in impermanence, something that the Japanese are all too familiar with. It's a certain kind of poetic, seeing such beauty and knowing that it was only going to last for two weeks or so.

Nonetheless, we made sure we hit up the different hanami (or flower viewing) spots around the city. There were days with slight rain as the first bloom began, but the skies cleared up just in time for full bloom.

Spots like Nakameguro River and Sumida River in Asakusa will never disappoint, save for the crowds. Ensure you spend enough time walking along the rivers until you get to more quiet areas.

What's great is that after doing hanami, the rest of Tokyo is still waiting to be discovered. ✨

Shimokitazawa at Night

If you're following me on Instagram (), you might have seen some photos from this miniset already!

In any case, it was my first time in this side of Tokyo at night, and it has a completely different vibe versus the crowds during the day.

Thought I'd share how this area looks like when the streets are almost empty, and the day is coming to a close. There are also a few photos from new areas I only discovered during this recent visit, when we turned to the right as we exit the station. There's more food options too!

Chukasoba Kotetsu remains as my fave ramen place in this area, however! The shoyu ramen bowl tastes even better on a winter's night. 🌝

Lastly, these were all taken with my trusty Sony a7R V, and I got to try out the new SEL2870GM. The f/2.0 opening definitely helps in terms of capturing scenes in lowlight!

Winter in Kanazawa

It's one of the first places we visited during a winter trip back to Japan. It was our first time in this side of the country, and it was every bit as beautiful.

It ticks all of the boxes one would look for in a Japanese city, from the amazing food, the neon-lit alley ways, temples and parks, except there were significantly less tourists compared to Tokyo or Kyoto.

Seafood in Kanazawa is excellent and definitely a must-try when visiting Omicho Market, but I have to say that Noto beef was what we kept coming back for.

There are plenty of other areas to explore, both in the day and at night as the vibe completely changes in neighbourhoods such as Higashichaya and Nagamachi.

I want to go back and see this area too when it's not covered in snow!

As if trapped in time, Penang provided a very good respite for me, away from the hustle and the glitz of Sunny Singapore.

From old shophouses, rundown back alleys, the actually affordable and good food, the most instagrammable cafes, Penang has it all, and then some more.

It was the first time in a while that I got to explore a new city with such amazing texture and character, all while still getting my fix of kopi peng.

My days of shooting in Penang were mostly done either very early in the morning or late at night, while I stuff my face with a lot of local food in between.

I cannot wait to go back, cos I now have my favourites, but also can't wait to explore more of what Penang has to offer!

Photoshoot in Shibuya with Georgia Risa!

I know this is not the usual photoset that you're used to seeing from my page, but I hope you all like these just as much as my travel photos. I've quit my full time job a couple of months ago, and have been busy exploring more creative projects here and there, and this is one of them. 😊 Hope you can all continue to support me along the way!

Sayonara Bye Bye is a city pop song that also happens to be one of the ending themes for the anime Yu Yu Hakusho (or Ghost Fighter if you grew up in the Philippines). Took inspiration from this song and thought about how scenes from it will look like if Georgia was to be the persona.

After days of building my vision in my head, borrowing the right wardrobe pieces (thanks to my stylist friend Gabby G!), scouting for locations in Shibuya and Harajuku, the result is a photoset I've never done before. I'm really quite happy with how these turned out and how I was able to fulfil what I had in my mind, with tweaks along the way, tons of help from amazing friends like Jason and Vivienne, and of course, Georgia's amazing talent!

For the longest time, I've been asking myself what it would look like if I were to incorporate portraiture into the usual style of photography that I do here. I'm glad I finally have an answer! Can't wait to develop this more and see what else is there to do!

All photos taken with the Sony ⍺7RV. Lenses used are the SEL1018, SEL24F14GM and SEL2470GM2.
