Some moments in life require us to get up close and personal. In today’s session, I used the Nikon MC 105/2.8 S to do just that.

Fireworks are only half the story.

Summer in Japan is intensely hot, but one of the most beautiful ways to experience the season is by attending a fireworks festival. Throughout the summer, fireworks illuminate the night sky almost every weekend—but I’m equally inspired by what happens beneath them.

Friends, families, and couples arrive dressed in colorful summer yukata, filling the streets with tradition, beauty, excitement, and anticipation. For a photographer, the entire evening becomes an opportunity to capture both spectacle and emotion.

Here are my tips for photographing fireworks with the Nikon Z9:

📷 Use a tripod.
A stable camera is essential when working with longer exposures at night.

📷 Use a remote release.
This helps prevent camera movement when pressing the shutter.

📷 Expose for the fireworks—not the darkness.
Fireworks are extremely bright, even against a black sky. I typically begin around f/11 with a low ISO, then adjust based on the intensity and distance of the display.

📷 Photograph in manual mode.
Once you find the exposure that preserves the color and detail in the fireworks, manual settings will help you maintain consistency.

📷 Bring a second camera body.
This is my power tip. I use one Nikon body—usually my Z9—to capture the fireworks, while keeping my Z6III ready to photograph the human story.

The laughter.
The anticipation.
The reflections of light on someone’s face.
The quiet moments between friends.
The joy of experiencing something beautiful together.

The fireworks may be happening in the sky, but some of the evening’s most memorable photographs are happening right beside you.

What do you enjoy photographing most—the fireworks or the people watching them?

Sending love to the one and only !

Dana is one of those rare artist who walks into a room and brings dignity, warmth, humor, strength, and soul with her.

I’ve had the honor of working with her many times over the years and every time, I’m reminded that true greatness is not what someone does in front of the camera. It is how they make people feel when the cameras are not rolling.

Much love and respect always to the Queen!
