In the afternoon of Tenjin Matsuri's day 1, the carts come back in front of Tenmangu.

Every cart belongs to a kō, a neighbourhood association, with its own name on its own lanterns and the same names on them for generations. Hundreds of people. Most of what they do is tents and rope and lists and being at a place at a time, and it goes on for weeks. Then it all arrives at once, in front of the shrine, in the afternoon sun, and for an hour Tenma is the loudest place in Japan.

Everyone knows Tenjin Matsuri has the boats and the fireworks. That's tomorrow. This is the day before, and it's the part I'd come back for. But man, it was hot!

Before the flare and glare of the cart procession, before the boats and the fireworks, there's the day one procession through the streets of Tenma.
Tenjin Matsuri started around 951 and it takes hundreds of people to put on.
Priests, elders, helpers. They're at the shrine in the morning and they walk for hours through Osaka in July in full dress, and the festival that a million people come to see on day two is standing on top of a day and a half of that.

Tenmangu on the morning of Tenjin Matsuri's day 1, before the procession goes out. The plum crest is on the lanterns, on the ema, and on the white t-shirts the men putting up the tent are wearing. Same mark on all of it, and in black and white it's obvious, because a lantern and a wooden plaque and a cotton tee stop being three different objects and go back to being the same black shape on white.

Hundreds of people put this festival on and at this hour this is what most of that looks like. Carrying things. Tying things down. A phone call.

Then they change into the vestments and carry the mikoshi through Tenma until dark. That's when the show begins!

I try to avoid crowded places like Dotonbori, but I had recently the chance to shoot there on a workshop and here's some photos from the area.

Reminded me that any location might have interesting frames waiting, if you know where to look.

Shinsekai is one of the most photographed areas in Osaka. It exists to be looked at, and the backdrop does the work. A hundred lanterns, Shōwa signs, the kushikatsu neon. It's fixed. It's there every day. Anyone can point a camera at it.

Getting there and spending the day while pointing the camera at people who aren't looking at it, going about their day, it's kind of the whole point. If Shinsekai hands you a giant octopus, the temptation is to shoot the octopus.

Instead, these frames use it as a wall and let a man in a suit walk across it. The photograph is about who you let walk into the frame, and the right timing.

Retro architecture in Kyoto is either super weird like the Robot building in Gion, or super lovely like the old barbershops, restaurants and shops that are everywhere in town.

Kyoto goes quiet at night in a way other cities don't.
Not empty. The trains still run, the stations still fill, people still move through with somewhere to be. The noise just sits lower.
