畳 Traditional Tatami
Nowadays, there are some other materials that can be used to make Japanese tatami matting but traditionally, the base layer ‘tatami doko’ is made from many layers of rice straw, which are tightly fastened and heavily compressed. The cover layer or ‘omote’ is produced from ‘igusa’(rush). Then comes the beautifully coloured ‘heri’ edging to finish. The whole mat is crafted into a precisely sized rectangle. Of course, there are many more details involved, but tatami is one of the most important design elements of traditional Japanese homes, temples and alike. It’s very special.
