Andrew 杏土龍 00001

"Andrew" is the name of a typical man, meaning brave. "Andrew" is one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus in the New Testament and Peter's brother. He was martyrdom on an X-shaped cross in Greece during his mission, so this form is called the "Andrew Cross" and is also the flag of Scotland. In the Japanese Bible, “アンデレ” is described as "Andrew". I think it is rare for Japanese people to have a name based on "Andrew". I chose the Kanji for "杏土龍" that I used this time. “杏” is an apricot and is often used as a name in Japan. “土” is soil and “龍” means dragon. I imagined a dragon, the guardian deity of the rich earth where apricots grow.
“土龍” is an animal mole as it is, but 諸葛孔明 Zhuge Liang, who was active in the Three Kingdoms period of China, was called “伏龍” when he was young. It means a talented young man looking for an opportunity to ascend to heaven. I put such an image in “杏土龍”.

「土龍」はそのままでは動物のモグラですが、中国の三国時代に活躍した蜀の諸葛孔明は、若い頃「伏龍」と呼ばれていました。昇天する機会を窺う才能ある若者の意味ですね。「杏土龍」にもそんなイメージを込めました。

"Benjamin" is the name of a typical man, originally Benjamin from the Old Testament. He is Jacob's twelfth son and the founder of the Benjamin tribe, one of the twelve tribes of Israel. Very few people in Japan have this name. I chose the Kanji for "勉耶民" that I used this time. "勉" is studying, and "耶" is a question. "民" means people. I imagined a person who diligently tackles questions. You are a diligent and hard worker.

Luke 路加 00001

"Luke" is the name of a typical man. In the New Testament, he appears as the author of the Gospel of Luke and is considered a saint in some denominations. Looking at the Acts of the Apostles, there is an interesting description that is presumed to have gone on a missionary trip with Paul. There are many celebrities named "Luke", but perhaps the most famous is Luke Skywalker from STAR WARS. In the Bible written in Japanese, "Luke" is written as “路加” and pronounced as “ルカ”. Curiously, in Japan, “ルカ” is not a male name but a female name, and various variations of Kanji such as "瑠夏" and "流花" are used. Among them, this time we adopted "路加" which has been used for a long time.

There are many celebrities named "Sarah", but the one that comes to my mind most is the French actress Sarah Bernhardt. Nowadays, there are many Japanese women with the name "Sarah", and Sara Takanashi, a female ski jumper, is one of them. This time, I used the Kanji “沙羅” from her name. A plant called 沙羅双樹 is created in the Japanese classic “平家物語”. I think her parents probably adopted the word “沙羅” from here.

"Phillip" is the name of a typical man. The etymology is the Greek word "Philippos", which is said to mean a horse lover. According to the New Testament, he is one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, but there are not many mentions of Philip. In the Japanese Bible he is written as “フィリポ” or “ピリポ. There are many celebrities named "Phillip" including King Philip IV. It is also a company name, such as Philips and Philip Morris. "Phillip" pronounced in English is almost the same even if pronounced in Japanese, but it is very rare for Japanese people to have the name "Phillip". The Kanji "呎里歩" used this time is my coined word. "呎" means the unit of length, feet. "里" is a unit of length in Japan. And "歩" is walking. Using these Kanji, I drew the characters "呎里歩" in the image of a walking person.

"David" is the name of a typical man. He is the great king of Israel who appeared in the books of Samuel in the Old Testament and defeated the giant Goliath. It is also said that many of the 150 psalms were written by David. After the Babylonian captivity, a savior was long-awaited, but it was believed that a savior would be born from David's lineage. The New Testament often describes Jesus as the son of David. There are countless celebrities named "David", including King David I and II of Scotland. I first think of British Prime Minister David Cameron. "David" pronounced in English is almost the same even if pronounced in Japanese, but it is very rare for Japanese people to have the name "David". The Kanji ”太闢" used this time seems to have been used for a long time, and it appears in the works of Japanese author Eiji Yoshikawa. There is a shrine called "大避神社" in Japan. Don't you think "太闢" and "大避" are very similar? Perhaps ancient Japan and Jewish people had something to do with each other.

His name is written in Hebrew as "Saul" and "Paul" seems to come from Greek. He has countless celebrities named "Paul". Paul Gauguin, Paul McCartney, Paul Newman. "Paul" pronounced in English sounds familiar, but it is very rare for Japanese people to have the name "Paul". The Kanji “保羅” used this time was adopted from the book of Kanzo Uchimura, a Bible researcher in the Meiji era in Japan.

"John" is the name of a typical man. The Old Testament tells us that he baptized Jesus as John the Baptist. There are countless celebrities named "John". For example, John F Kennedy, John Lennon, John McEnroe. As a Japanese, I first think of John Manjiro, who appears in Japanese history. In Japan, John the Baptist is written as “ヨハネ” and pronounced “Yohane”, but this time we used the Kanji “如音" based on the pronunciation from the English "John". “如” means “That’s right, and ”音” means “Sound”.
It sounds very good as it seems to say "You are right ..." in your ear. Do not you think so?

耳元で「君は正しい……」と言われているように思えてとても良い響きです。そう思いませんか？

"Mary" is the name of a typical woman, and I think it is derived from the name of Maria, the mother of Jesus. Many royal women, including Queen of Scotland Mary Stuart, have the name "Mary". In English reading, it is pronounced "Mary", but in Japan it is pronounced "Mari" in most cases. Even in Japan, various Kanji are used in very major names, and there are many other variations such as “万里” and “麻理” e.t.c. Among them, this time I chose the Kanji of "茉莉". It is a flower jasmine.

「Mary」は代表的な女性の名前で、イエスの母マリアの名前から派生しているのだと思います。メアリー・スチュアート　スコットランド女王をはじめ多くの王族の女性が「Mary」の名前を持っています。英語読みでは「マリー」と発音しますが、日本では殆どの場合が「マリ」と発音します。日本でもとてもメジャーな名前でいろんな漢字が使われていて「万里」や「麻理」などその他にも多くのバリエーションが存在します。その中でも今回は「茉莉」の漢字を選ばせていただきました。「茉莉」は、花のジャスミンですね。
