Este fotolibro mostrará 1.600 imágenes, incluidas algunas nunca vistas, tomadas durante los últimos 85 días de la vida del famoso actor de Hollywood, que muno en un accudente automovilistico a la edad de 24 años en 1955. Las imágenes las tomó en 1955 el fotógrafo Sanford Roth (1906-1962) y los negativos originales forman parte de la colección privada de renombre mundial propiedad de Seita Ohnishi, un hombre de negocios japonés, además ávido y apasionado admirador de Dean.

La restauración digital de 1.600 imágenes en un período de 3 años en Japón; Al este del edén, Rebelde sin causa y Gigante son las tres películas que llevaron a Dean al estrellato mundial. En 1977, Ohnishi construyó un monumento de acero en el lugar del accidente que mató a Dean porque, en sus palabras, «no había nada que conmemorara su legado y debería haberlo». Beulah Roth, la esposa del difunto Sanford, tejió una relación de amistad con Ohnishi y le confió los negativos originales así como sus derechos de autor en 1987, describiendo la decisión «como dejar a un querido y cercano amigo a otro de mismo grado».

Las 1.600 imágenes son de los últimos 85 días de la vida de Dean en incluyen fotografías sacadas durante la producción de la película Gigante y durante la estancia privada que pasó con los Roths. Todas las imágenes han sido restauradas digitalmente por expertos de la Colección Seita Ohnishi de los Archivos James Dean desde marzo de 2016 en Japón.

Tomofumi Nakano, director de proyecto de James Dean Archives, a quien se le ocurrió la idea de publicar un fotolibro, declaró: «Nos llevó más de 3 años completar los procesos de restauración digital con la velocidad de sólo una o dos imágenes al día porque los negativos estaban lejos de estar en condiciones ideales por razones obvias. Pero creemos que, sacando este libro de fotos al público, podemos ofrecer las escasas oportunidades que hay de redescubrir detalles en el contexto, no sólo para los admiradores de Dean, sino también para los aficionados al cine en general, a los automóviles y a la fotografía».

Cet ouvrage illustré comptera 1600 photos, dont certaines inédites, prises au cours des 85 derniers jours de la vie du célèbre acteur hollywoodien, mort dans un accident de voiture à 24 ans, en 1955. Toutes les images ont ete prrses en 1955 oar les photographe Sanford Roth (1906-1962),les négatifs originaux faisant partie de la collection privée de classe mondiale appartenant à Seita Ohnishi, un homme d'affaires japonais et admirateur absolu de James Dean.

La restauration numérique de 1600 photos s'est faite sur trois ans au Japon. À l'est d'Éden, La Fureur de vivre et Géant sont les trois films qui ont fait de Dean une vedette planétaire. En 1977, Ohnishi a fait construire un monument en acier sur le lieu de l'accident car, selon ses mots, « il n'y avait rien pour commémorer son héritage, alors qu'il devrait y avoir quelque chose, » Beulah Roth, l'épouse du regretté Sanford, s'est liée d'amitié avec Ohnishi et lui a confié les négatifs originaux, ainsi que les droits d'auteur en 1987, justifiant ce choix : « c'est comme les faire passer d'un être proche et cher à un autre, à un degré égal. »

Les 1600 photos correspondent aux 85 derniers jours de la vie de James Dean, notamment celles prises lors du tournage du film Géant et des moments intimes passés avec les Roth. Toutes les photos ont été restaurées numériquement à partir de mars 2016, au Japon, par des spécialistes de la James Dean Archives Seita Ohnishi Collection.

« Il nous a fallu plus de trois ans pour terminer les processus de restauration numérique, au rythme d'une ou deux photos par jour, car les négatifs étaient loin d'être dans les meilleures conditions, pour des raisons évidentes », a révélé Tomofumi Nakano, le chef de projet des archives James Dean, qui a eu l'idée de publier l'ouvrage illustré. « Mais nous pensons que rendre disponible au grand public cet ouvrage illustré offrira une occasion rare de redécouvrir des détails de cette époque, que ce soit pour les admirateurs de James Dean, ou les amateurs de cinéma en général, d'automobile ou de photographie. »

1600 Aufnahmen, die innherhalb eines Zeitraums von drei Jahren in Japan entstanden, wurden digital restauriert. „Jenseits von Eden",.... denn sie wissen nicht, was sie tun" und „Giganten" sind jene drei Spielfilme, die James Dean zu internationalem Ruhm verhalfen. 1977 ließ Ohnishi ein Stahlmonument am Unfallort, an dem Dean verstarb, errichten und erklärte: „Es war nichts vorhanden, dass seine Hinterlassenschaft in Würde zelebrierte, und das sollte geändert werden." Beulah Roth, Ehefrau des verstorbenen Sanford, entwickelte ein freundschaftliches Verhältnis mit Ohnishi und vertraute ihm 1987 sowohl die Originalnegative als auch ihre Urheberrechte an. „Es ist, als überließe man einen teuren Freund jemandem, den man auf gleiche Weise schätzt", beschrieb sie ihren Entschluss.

Die 1600 Fotos entstanden während Deans letzten 85 Lebenstagen und beinhalten jene Aufnahmen, die während der Produktion des Spielfilms „Giganten" sowie privat verbrachter Zeit mit den Roths gemacht wurden, Sämtliche Aufnahmen wurden seit März 2016 in Japan von Experten der James Dean Archives Seita Ohnishi Collection digital restauriert.

„Gut drei Jahre hat es gedauert, die digitale Restauration abzuschließen. Lediglich ein oder zwei Bilder pro Tag konnten bearbeitet werden, da die Negative aus offensichtlichen Gründen weit von ihrem ursprünglichen Zustand entfernt waren", erklärte Tomofumi Nakano, Projektmanager der James Dean Archives, dessen Idee es war, einen Bildband zu veröffentlichen. „Wir sind davon überzeugt, dass wir nicht nur Dean-Fans, sondern ebenso Kino-Freunden im Allgemeinen, Auto-Fans und Fotografiebegisterten die seltene Möglichkeit bieten, kontextbezogene Details zu entdecken, indem wir diesen Bildband in den Blickpunkt der Öffentlichkeit stellen."

This photobook will show 1,600 images, including never-before seen ones, taken during the last 85 days of the famed Hollywood actor's life, who died in an auto accident at the age of 24 in 1955. The images were all taken in 1955 by photographer Sanford Roth (1906 - 1962)and the original negatives are part of the world class private collection owned by Seita Ohnishi, a Japanese businessman as well as an avid and passionate fan of Dean.

“East of Eden,” “Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant” are the three films that lifted Dean to global stardom. In 1977, Ohnishi built a steel monument at the scene of the accident that killed Dean because, in his words, “there was nothing to
commemorate his legacy and there should be some.” Beulah Roth, the wife of the late Sanford, established a friendship with Ohnishi and entrusted him with the original negatives as well as their copyrights in 1987, describing the decision
“like leaving one dear and near friend to another with equal degree.”

The 1,600 images are from the last 85 days of Dean’ s life, including those taken during the production of the movie “Giant” and the private time spent with the Roths. All the images have been digitally restored by experts of James Dean
Archives Seita Ohnishi Collection since March 2016 in Japan.

“It took us more than 3 years to complete digital restoration processes with the speed of only one or two images a day because the negatives were far from their ideal conditions for obvious reasons,” says Tomofumi Nakano, the project manager of James Dean Archives who came up with the idea to publish a photobook. “But we believe that, having this photobook out in the public eyes, we can present rare opportunities to rediscover details in the context for not only fans of Dean but fans of cinema at large, fans of automobiles and photography as well.”

「ジャイアンツ」の出演の姿、ロス夫妻と過ごしたプライベートの姿を含む生前最後の85 日間1600 カットにおよぶ写真は、2016 年3 月より「ジェームズ・ディーン・アーカイブス　大西清太コレクション」の専門家によってデジタル修復を行ってきました。

写真集を企画したJD アーカイブスのプロジェクトマネージャーの中野智文は「1955 年撮影のネガは傷も多く劣化しているため、一日一枚か二枚の修復で3 年以上かかりましたが、1600 カットの貴重な写真を見ていただける機会を設けることで、ディーンのファンだけでなく映画ファン、自動車ファン、写真ファンにとって新たな発見の場となればと思っています」と話しています。

「毎日新聞」１面掲載、「世界ふしぎ発見」も注目のプロジェクトの集大成となる写真集です。
