先日の大雪のタイミング。ずっと雪降ってたのだけど、一瞬だけ陽が差して青空が来た瞬間の一枚。わずか数秒だった。こういうタイミングを残せるのも写真のいいところ。

During the heavy snowfall the other day, it had been snowing nonstop—but for just a moment the sun broke through and a patch of blue sky appeared. This shot was taken in those few seconds. Being able to preserve moments like that is one of the great things about photography.

鈴鹿の森庭園の過去写真も、そろそろ終わりにしときます。過去写真最後の一枚は、鈴鹿の森庭園でも最大の枝垂れ梅「天の龍」の前に落ちてた一輪の梅の花。逆光で光るその一輪がとても美しくて、夢中で撮った一枚。こういう時写真って楽しいなーと思います。地面に落ちた一輪の花さえ、ファインダーを通せば主役になるって、最高じゃないですか。

I’ll wrap up my throwback photos from Suzuka no Mori Garden soon. The last one is a single plum blossom that had fallen in front of “Ten-no-Ryū,” the largest weeping plum tree in the garden. That one flower glowing in backlight was so beautiful that I shot it completely absorbed. Moments like this remind me how fun photography is. Even a single flower on the ground can become the main character once you look at it through the viewfinder—how great is that?

鈴鹿の森庭園の枝垂れ梅。満開の少し後、雨や風のあとの晴れを狙って行くと、信じられないほど美しい、光差すピンクのカーペットが梅の木の下にできています。それがまた一際春を感じさせる美しい瞬間なんですよね。今年は3月上旬頃に満開との予想です。楽しみです。

何度キャプションに梅って書いても、桜ってコメントいただくんですが、梅です。日本最大の枝垂れ梅。場所も書いてるのにどこって聞かれること多々あるんですが、鈴鹿の森庭園です。鈴鹿は三重県にあります。

The weeping plum blossoms at Suzuka no Mori Garden—if you time it for a clear day right after rain or wind, just past full bloom, an unbelievably beautiful sunlit pink carpet forms beneath the trees. It’s an especially gorgeous moment that makes you feel spring in full. This year, peak bloom is expected around early March. I can’t wait.

Just like during cherry blossom season, the National Treasure Biwako Canal shows the very peak of its beauty on the night of a heavy snowfall that chills you to the bone. White rime ice beneath a starry sky where Orion sparkles, and a water flow on the verge of freezing. A canal that supports everyday life transforms, for a fleeting moment, into a work of natural art.

和歌山県新宮市神倉神社にて開催される火祭り「お燈祭り」。炎を掲げ、巨石の転がる参道を全速力で走り降りる「上がり子」たちの灼熱の軌跡。山全体が燃え上がっているような凄まじい輝きは、命の輝きそのもののようで、現実世界の光景とは思えない濃密な祝祭空間だった。1枚撮り。

撮影にあたっては、いつも花火でお世話になっている乱歩さん の1ヶ月近くに渡るアドバイスと当日の完璧なオペレーションがなければ、満足な写真は一枚さえ撮れなかったと思います。当日の運営側でのお仕事の合間に心を砕いて助けてくださって、本当に本当にありがとうございました。また花火の時期もどうぞよろしくお願い致します！

また、あの過酷な待ち時間を共に乗り越えた , .inc , , の皆さんも本当にありがとう。大変だったけど終始楽しかったのは、皆さんがいてくれたおかげです。特に二日間まるまる一緒に過ごしたショックさんとゆっきーには心からの感謝を。ラーメンも美味かった！

来年行きたいと思った方がいたら、当日のお祭りの運行や撮影に関する重要な取り決めがあります。地元の人たちが大切にされているお祭りなので、地元の定めたお祭りのルールに従って行動、撮影してくださるようお願い致します。

The Oto Matsuri, a fire festival in Shingū City, Wakayama Prefecture. Carrying flames, the agariko runners race full speed down a shrine approach strewn with massive stones, leaving behind scorching trails of fire. The overwhelming glow—so intense it feels as if the entire mountain is ablaze—was like the radiance of life itself, a dense festival space that hardly seemed real. A single-shot image.

For this shoot, I wouldn’t have been able to take even one satisfying photo without nearly a month of advice beforehand and flawless on-the-day operations from Ranpo , whom I always rely on for fireworks. Thank you so, so much for taking such care to help me in the midst of your duties on the day. I look forward to working with you again during fireworks season!

And sincere thanks as well to , .inc, , and for enduring those brutal waiting hours together. It was tough, but fun all the way through thanks to you all. Special gratitude to Shock-san and Yukkey, with whom I spent both full days—thank you from the bottom of my heart. The ramen was great too!

If anyone is thinking of going next year, please be aware that there are important rules regarding the festival’s operation and photography on the day. This is a festival deeply cherished by the local community, so please follow the rules set by the locals when attending and shooting.
