Crisp Adventures x Momentum ~ a fine blend.

Not everyone wanted monkeys and onsen that day… one of our gang craved even more powdery turns.

So while the crew headed off to Jigokudani, I was thrilled to make a different kind of magic happen for one of my clients.

I linked him up with the legends at Momentum Camps for a one-on-one day on snow. What followed? Personal coaching from top coach Ken Rhodes … and casually sharing the hill and rubbing shoulders with none other than “the Godfather of Freeskiiing“ himself, Mike Douglas. No big deal. Just a little ski royalty thrown into the Crisp Adventures mix 😜

That’s the thing with these trips. It’s not one-size-fits-all. It’s about making magic moments - whether that’s chilling with snow monkeys or lapping pow with the best in the game.

Moments. Mountains. Memories.

And occasionally… heroes on the hill. 🎿🔥🇯🇵

⛷️ Ski Report for the Day: Iwatake

Spring has well and truly sprung a leak in the Japanese Alps.

Today felt more mid-April than mid-winter as we explored the rather wonderful Iwatake - sunshine, softening slopes and a mountain that begged to be explored.

We opted for a leisurely start, letting the sun do its thing, and timed it just right. What followed was classic corn snow, the occasional pocket of “poor man’s powder”, soft bumps, amazing afternoon pistes, playful tree gullies and a few creatively navigated lift lines to keep us honest.

Not the biggest ski day of the trip. But absolutely a fun one. And a fine one to sign off on.

All the while we were treated to stellar views across the Hakuba Valley - jagged ridgelines, dramatic alpine faces, and that unmistakable Japanese mountain skyline that has framed our adventure.

And just like that… the ski chapter of this journey draws to a close.

A month in Japan. The deepest of powder days. A few bluebirds. Storm skiing. More tree laps than you can shake a stick at. Touring missions. Cultural curveballs. Every season condensed into one epic slab of Crisp Adventures fun.

Happy faces. Tired legs. Slightly jaded minds. Exactly how it should be.

I really hope the gang have enjoyed this adventure as much as I have. After all the planning, spreadsheets, e-mails, bookings and weather watching, it’s immensely satisfying to let it all slide to a close in the right way.

This was a good one.
One to remember.
One we’ll be talking about for years to come.
Sincerely… thank you to a mega crew.

Matsumoto Castle - the “Crow Castle” - standing proud against a frozen winter sky. Built in the late 1500s, this is one of Japan’s few original surviving castles, all black timber and white snow, rising from its moat like something pulled straight from a samurai epic. The red bridge, the still water reflections, the Japanese Alps in the background, it feels less like a monument and more like a moment suspended in time. Biting cold air, quiet footsteps, and 400 years of history. Japan does this sort of thing very, very well.

⛷️ Ski Report for the Day: Norikura and Cortina with Evergreen

Today, Norikura and the fabled Cortina drew our attention. A bluebird, views galore, the fabled red roof of the Green Plaza hotel, classic Hakuba.

That said, there’s no point sugar-coating it - today was a proper spring-like day in the Japanese Alps. After a couple of magic powder resets, we were met with some rapid warming.

Our first run in Cortina?
Absolutely dreamy. Tight trees, soft snow, fluffy and steep - a proper tree cooler to kick things off.

But the warmth crept in quickly. It wasn’t long before we started encountering heavier snow. Not quite elephant snot… but definitely heavy. Easily the heaviest snow I’ve ever skied in Japan.

Still - let’s get real a moment.

We are currently the greediest and spoiled of powder piglets around. When you ski somewhere as much as we have this month, you’re bound to stumble across the odd glitch in the matrix. We’ve had it outrageously good. You can’t expect perfection every single day.

And honestly? We still had a cracking adventure.

A long cruise down toward the reservoir, slushy groomers under blue skies, hunting soft pockets on the sides and still finding turns worth smiling about. It might not have been blower, but it was still fun. Oh, and some of our our group may have got a tad lost and ended up in an entirely different village, feeling the need to try and hitchhike back.

Cortina and Norikura delivered character, challenge, and another chapter in what’s felt like a trip that’s given us every season compressed into a one month epic adventure. I’ve had one hell of a trip. I’m pretty sure (and hopeful) the gang have, too.

Tomorrow looks even warmer, so sun cream at the ready and embrace the farewell vibes. One last dance. Can you believe it?

We’ve been incredibly lucky. Even on a “not full pow cycle” day, conditions have still been pretty darn good.

No complaints here.
We’ve had an absolute ball. Iwatake awaits our final turns. One. Last. Dance.

⛷️ Ski Report for the Day: 16 | Tsugiake ski touring with Evergreen (Part 2)

We woke to heavy snow falling outside the window this morning, that unmistakable silence and softness that only means one thing. Powder day. And better still, we were set to ski Tsugaike Kogen with the Evergreen crew 😊

Touring through the forest, skins applied and spirits high, our guide Andy - a good Canadian chap from Golden - started getting chatter through the radio. Reports buzzing in of 35–45cm fresh.

Colour us stoked.
Today was not going to suck.

The first lap was pure magic. Deep in the trees, snow still falling, that muffled forest calm before gravity takes over.

And then… the first drop.

Deep. Steep. Bottomless.
A chorus of excited powder piglets echoing snorts of glee through the trees. Suck, it did not!

Back up we went into an area called Magic Trees, and they delivered exactly what they promised - steep, untouched lines, and a lot of very happy humans.

After heading back into resort for a well-earned ramen refuel, we clipped back in and toured once more - this time skiing a “piste” that’s been closed for a while. Completely untouched. We carved our signatures into fresh snow that hadn’t seen another track.

All in? Triumph. Welcome back, Japow.

We’ve loved the views, the alpine drama, the sunshine… but today we were back where we truly craved to be - deep in the trees, whooping and spraying snow and grinning like idiots.

Now that’s more like it 🇯🇵
