So many of my most treasured portfolio shots have been shot in the most remote parts of Hokkaido.

There’s something about having to push through blizzards, icy roads, and snowstorms in order to get the shots of your life. For me as an Australian, anytime I see snow it’s a novelty, so having to really be in it and EARN many of these shots is something that I treasure deeply.

The easiest, fastest way to improve your compositions is to just do this one thing.

Then, once you understand it, you can start to understand other “visual patterns” in photography and use them to improve dramatically.

Using frames is like the gateway to really unlocking your growth in photography, and it’s the first concept I always teach.

This is probably one of my favourite spots in Japan when it comes to flowers. It’s 5 million crimson red spider lilies. An absolutely amazing sight to see.

They’re representative of death and the afterlife in Japanese culture because they’re poisonous to humans, dogs, and cats if ingested. But hey, they’re super pretty to look at so long as you keep your distance.

While Kyoto & Osaka are absolutely amazing cities, there’s just so much to see in the greater region. Many of the locations have little to no crowds compared to the crush in the main cities.

Take the road less travelled the next time you come to Japan. Your photos will be much better for it!
